Orlando Saraiva

Orlando Saraiva is a ninth-degree red belt who taught across São Paulo and helped organize the state’s first jiu-jitsu championship in 1976.

Biography

Orlando Saraiva is a ninth-degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu red belt whose career links Osvaldo “Paquetá” at Funabem, Carlson Gracie’s academy in Rio de Janeiro, and the spread of jiu-jitsu teaching across São Paulo state. Graciemag’s retrospective profile, which provides most of the account of his early life and work, says he was born in Belém do Pará in 1951, moved to Rio as a baby, and trained more than 100 black belts over his career. Saraiva began training at thirteen through Paquetá at Funabem. He also began assisting Paquetá with jiu-jitsu classes for children there. He also trained at the Gracie academy under Carlson Gracie, receiving his black belt there in 1969. Paquetá’s formative role came first; Carlson stands in Saraiva’s later black-belt lineage. Funabem transferred Saraiva to São Paulo in 1976. He began teaching in São Paulo, Campinas, and Mogi Mirim, and on December 12, 1976, helped organize the first São Paulo State Jiu-Jitsu Championship. Saraiva recalled teaching in as many as seven cities at once. The network continued through his students and family. His son José Henrique Saraiva is described by current academy pages as a fifth-degree black belt under his father and as an instructor in Ireland. Separately, BJJ Heroes lineage tables place Marcelo Ferreira and Paulo Streckert directly after Orlando Saraiva in two recorded lineages. The tables support those lineage links, but do not identify a promotion date or ceremony for either man.
