Carlson Gracie Jr.

Carlson Gracie Jr. is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu coral belt and coach who taught at his father's Rio academy before opening a school in Chicago.

Biography

Carlson Gracie Jr. is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu coral belt and Carlson Gracie Team coach whose teaching took him from his father's Rio de Janeiro academy to a school in Chicago. He is the son of Carlson Gracie Sr. and grandson of Carlos Gracie. Born in Rio de Janeiro state in 1969, he began training with his father at the Copacabana academy when he was three. He later recalled losing the final of his first jiu-jitsu tournament at seven. RedeTV reported that his father awarded him a black belt in 1993, on the same day as Wallid Ismail. His competition extended beyond jiu-jitsu. In a 2011 interview, Gracie Jr. described himself as a six-time Brazilian national champion across Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling. Sherdog records a draw with John Lewis at Extreme Fighting in November 1995 and another with Bob Schirmer at Chicago Challenge 6 in May 1999. He traced his preference for takedowns and top control to wrestling and his father's approach, and said that training with larger teammates shaped his pressure-based game. Before moving abroad, he taught at his father's academy in Rio. In his account, he moved to the United States in 1995 and then to Chicago in 1996 to open a Brazilian jiu-jitsu school. He recalled having to learn English to teach classes there. By 2013, he was running an academy in Chicago and teaching seminars in Brazil, including one in Juiz de Fora. In a 2017 interview, he described the Chicago school as a place for competitors and for students training for exercise or self-defense. Gracie Jr. returned from Chicago in August 2015 as his father's Copacabana academy faced closure, and joined a farewell gathering there. The academy's future changed: Graciemag reported in October that a new lease would allow it to reopen. RedeTV reported that Gracie Jr. received a coral belt at a ceremony in Rio de Janeiro in January 2024.
