Francisco Mansor is a ninth-degree red belt whose path from Hélio Gracie’s student to Kioto founder included federation work.

Biography

Francisco Mansor, also known as Chico, is a ninth-degree red belt whose path in Brazilian jiu-jitsu ran from Hélio Gracie’s instruction in Rio de Janeiro to the founding of Kioto Jiu-Jitsu Academy in 1965. Kioto says Mansor began training with Hélio at sixteen, while a PUC-Rio study identifies Francisco José Mansor as Hélio’s student and records the same academy founding. Alongside the academy story, his work extended to the organization of the sport. Kioto credits Mansor with helping create the first Guanabara state federation in 1963, later FJJ-Rio. The same academy profile names him, Carlos Couto, and Robson Gracie in the creation of the CBJJ in 1993, the organization from which the IBJJF later originated. In a 2024 GracieMag report, Mansor recalled that federation organizers in the 1960s had to decide on scoring and competition rules. His recollection places him within a shared effort to organize jiu-jitsu competition; it does not assign him sole credit for its rules.
