Banni Cavalcanti

Banni Cavalcanti was a Carlson Gracie black belt and a founder of the Confederação Brasileira de Jiu-Jitsu; he died in 2021.

Biography

Banni Cavalcanti began training jiu-jitsu in 1972. As a black belt, he went to Rio de Janeiro to train with Carlson Gracie and competed in vale-tudo bouts across Brazil’s Northeast. Ge reports that he founded both the Federação de Jiu-Jitsu do RN and the Confederação Brasileira de Jiu-Jitsu, and held a red-and-white eighth-degree jiu-jitsu belt. In 2009, Brasília named Banni Scovsck Cavalcanti dos Santos an Honorary Citizen. He died on April 6, 2021, aged 55; the Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil in Rio Grande do Norte described him as an icon who introduced jiu-jitsu to the state.
