Edson Carvalho

Edson “Baiano” Carvalho is a Carlson Gracie black belt whose Rio reputation helped build jiu-jitsu interest in Bahia.

Biography

Edson “Baiano” Carvalho is an eighth-degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt in Carlson Gracie’s lineage and the leader of Team Carvalho’s Dunnellon academy. His career connects his family’s martial-arts environment, competition in Rio de Janeiro, and work that helped organize jiu-jitsu’s growth in Bahia. Carvalho began martial arts at age four under his father, Ciro. After winning titles in Bahia, he moved to Rio de Janeiro in 1989, studied with Prof. Mehdi, and represented both Flamengo and Carlson Gracie in competition. Carlson Gracie’s published black-belt list includes Carvalho, placing him directly in Carlson’s jiu-jitsu lineage. His name and reputation also became part of jiu-jitsu’s growth in Bahia. Team Carvalho’s history dates Ricardo’s founding of the academy to 1991 and says he named it Academia Edson Carvalho in his brother’s honor. That same history credits Edson’s reputation with helping generate interest in jiu-jitsu in the state. During the 1990s, Edson and Ricardo also helped create the Bahia Jiu-Jitsu Federation to organize the sport’s growth in the state. Carvalho’s technical approach joined judo projection to positional control and treated that control as the foundation for an offensive ground game: position before submission. His work as an instructor has produced documented black belts as well. Bruno Carvalho identifies his uncle Edson as one of the instructors who awarded him a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt in 2004. BJJ Heroes reports that Carvalho awarded Mark Daniel Ramos his black belt on October 8, 2011, after Ramos trained in Carvalho’s judo-informed program.
