Walter Guimaraes

Walter Guimarães taught at Carlson Gracie's academy and presented his son Cezar “Casquinha” with a black belt at Carlson's request.

Biography

Walter Guimarães belonged to an early generation of Carlson Gracie's black belts and went on to teach in Carlson's academy. He was also the father of Cezar “Casquinha” Guimarães. Their connection to the same teacher became part of Cezar's own black-belt ceremony, when Carlson asked Walter to present the belt to his son. From student to teacher The Carlson Gracie Team's official register includes Walter among Carlson's black-belt graduates. Top Brother Sul's history traces his progress from studying at the Gracie academy to teaching at Carlson's school. It also describes him fighting on the preliminary cards of Carlson's bouts and credits him with reaching eighth-degree coral belt. A Sherdog retrospective places Walter alongside Fernando Pinduka, Sérgio Íris and Rosental in Carlson's early black-belt group. Pinduka's recollection describes the instruction around them: Carlson shared his techniques freely and prepared his students for competition. That account gives the setting in which Walter trained, alongside the academy history's description of his own teaching and appearances on fight cards. A belt passed from father to son Cezar began jiu-jitsu at four in the original Copacabana gym shared by Carlson and Rolls Gracie. In January 1986, Carlson decided that he was ready for a black belt. Rather than presenting it himself, Carlson gave Walter that part in the ceremony as a mark of respect. Top Brother's own history preserves the event as an acknowledgment of Walter's role. Cezar later opened an academy in Méier. In 2006, he and Muay Thai coach Vander Valverde formed Top Brother. His teaching therefore carried the connection with Walter and Carlson into another school. In a 2025 interview, Cristiano Marcello recalled starting jiu-jitsu with Cezar in Méier and identified him as the son of the late Walter Guimarães, Carlson's student. Walter is also included in Equipe Legião Matriz's memorial to deceased masters. A separate proposal reported in August 2020 named him among those to be honored in a martial-arts memorial near Rio de Janeiro's Olympic Park. The announced plan included a square bearing his name.
