Fabricio Martins

Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor Fabricio Martins Costa founded Equipe Fabrício in Copacabana and later created Fabricio International Team.

Biography

Fabricio Martins Costa is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructor, described by his academy today as an eighth-degree red-and-white belt, who founded Equipe Fabrício in Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro. The account of his school's early years comes largely from the academy and its association. The academy dates its founding to 1986. The FIT association recalls that Martins opened the school in a room at his parents' home after receiving his black belt, then moved it to Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana. He studied under Osvaldo Alves. Martins's teaching also reached beyond Rio. Florian Müller and Christian Bayer trained with him and Stephen Kamphuis in the Philippines in April 2008. A German report from December 2010 said Martins had proposed a gym under his name in Nuremberg and listed him as a regular visiting instructor. KMA, a Philippine affiliate, records that Martins awarded Kamphuis his fourth jiu-jitsu degree in July 2017 and his fifth in August 2022. In 2014, Martins created Fabricio International Team (FIT) to bring his students' competition entries under one team name. A 2017 Argentine report placed FIT in Copacabana, said 25 countries were associated with the academy, and recorded Martins teaching seminars in Río Grande and Ushuaia. That report described him as a seventh dan; the FIT association called him a coral belt under Alves in 2020. The later eighth-degree description comes from his academy and KMA, which says Alves awarded that degree. A 2018 report located FIT's academy on Avenida Nossa Senhora de Copacabana. The academy currently describes classes in self-defense, sport jiu-jitsu and no-gi for different age groups.
