Hiryu Niwa

Hiryu Niwa grew from a child in AXIS Yokohama’s adult classes into an AOJ competitor and an owner of his first academy.

Biography

Hiryu Niwa began jiu-jitsu after João Paulo Kuraoka offered him a gi. His father was already training, and his older brother Reon joined the following day. Born in Hiroshima in 2001 and raised from early childhood in Yokohama, Hiryu was seven when he started at AXIS Yokohama in 2008. There was no children’s class yet: the brothers joined the adults, practising self-defence while the grown-ups sparred and learning from João Paulo and João Carlos Kuraoka. In a 2019 MMAPLANET interview, Hiryu recalled being afraid of losing as a child and disliking competition. By junior high school he had become more comfortable with it. His first American training trip, in 2018, gave him another way to assess himself. Sparring at Art of Jiu-Jitsu, or AOJ, showed him that he could close the gap to the competitors there; repeated rounds with Zach Kaina helped his confidence and technique. In 2019, he won the adult purple-belt roosterweight division at the Pan Championship and took bronze in the same division at the Worlds. The brothers later told BJJASIA that the Pan victory had changed their sense of what they could achieve at adult level. Takamasa Watanabe promoted them to brown belt that July. Hiryu’s debut at the new rank brought a 0–2 loss to Tomoo Ide at the Tokyo Grand Slam. He described rushing, making small mistakes and needing better conditioning for repeated matches. While finishing high school, Hiryu decided against going on to university and left for another American training stay in December 2019. At AOJ, he especially valued the early drilling period before advanced and competition classes, when Guilherme Mendes could give detailed technical advice. The stay was interrupted by the cancellation of the 2020 Pan Championship and AOJ’s closure. The brothers returned to Japan in March; Hiryu told MMAPLANET that he regarded the interruption as time to prepare for another attempt. They also began teaching online. Inspired by AOJ’s instruction service, the brothers developed a Japanese platform during the pandemic and launched it on May 1, 2020, for practitioners training at home. Their service includes explanations of techniques and positions, sparring footage, and seminar or curriculum videos. In their BJJASIA interview that year, they described different games: Hiryu’s was more acrobatic and modern, while Reon favoured fundamental positions and pressure passing. Hiryu returned to the Pan podium in 2021 with adult brown-belt roosterweight gold, and also won brown-belt light-featherweight at the American Nationals. In an interview with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu News Blog after the Pan, he explained how AOJ’s emphasis on sustained pressure from the top had helped him keep attacking in the final when his preferred sequence failed. He also explained his choice of division: he competed at light featherweight in Japan but felt relatively small against that field at major American events, so chose roosterweight there. Encouragement from AXIS Yokohama had helped him through difficult preparation; he saw results as a way of repaying that support. At the 2021 Worlds, he reached the adult brown-belt roosterweight final against Matheus Vilaça. His preparation had included practising submissions against younger blue and purple belts as well as larger partners, working both from established positions and directly from guard. Serious leg-lock study had begun at brown belt at AOJ. He told MMAPLANET that work following an unsuccessful approach at the Pan had helped him finish his world quarterfinal and semifinal quickly. The final ended in a 0–2 defeat despite Hiryu collecting eight advantages, the lesser scores awarded for near-scoring actions. Reflecting on the silver medal, he accepted that he had failed to finish the match. Mendes had taught him that a champion needed to find a submission from any situation. The defeat also showed him how much work remained before he could contend at black belt. The brothers stayed at brown belt for another world-title attempt in 2022, with Hiryu providing extra partner training for Reon’s preparation at roosterweight. Hiryu distinguished between experimenting at smaller open tournaments and trusting his most dependable game at the Worlds. Before that event, he described five weeks of training with Thalison Soares as a source of confidence and further technical learning. Later, in a Jiu-Jitsu Times interview, the brothers credited Cole Abate with helping their no-gi development that year. They described one another as close friends as well as competitive rivals. At the 2022 No-Gi Worlds, they closed out the adult brown-belt light-featherweight final, taking the top two places: Reon received gold and Hiryu silver. Guilherme Mendes promoted both to black belt afterward. Hiryu won adult black-belt roosterweight silver at the 2023 Pan Championship. According to their own academy account, the brothers became owners of AXIS Yokohama in 2024, teaching at the place where they had started while continuing their own competition careers. That September, Hiryu faced Shoya Ishiguro in a ten-minute flyweight submission-grappling match at ONE Friday Fights 80. He attacked leg locks early and faced a late heel-hook attempt, losing by unanimous decision. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu News Blog’s report from the 2025 Abu Dhabi World Pro listed him as runner-up in the professional black-belt 56-kilogram division, representing AXIS.
