Cole Abate

Cole Abate is an American black belt who won ADCC Trials as a juvenile blue belt before taking IBJJF world titles in gi and no-gi.

Biography

Cole Abate was still a juvenile blue belt when he won the ADCC North American Trials, already testing himself against black belts. The American grappler had begun training jiu-jitsu at age five in Texas. In 2019, at 14, he moved to Costa Mesa to train under Rafael and Guilherme Mendes at Art of Jiu Jitsu. Guilherme Mendes promoted Abate to black belt in July 2023. Abate continued to represent Art of Jiu Jitsu as both a competitor and an instructor, then built his early black-belt record across gi, no-gi, and submission grappling. In 2024, he won the IBJJF No-Gi Pan and No-Gi World titles at featherweight. That December, he made his ONE Championship debut against Shinya Aoki and finished the match with an outside heel hook after 2 minutes 25 seconds. His first major black-belt gi title came at the 2025 Brazilian Nationals, where he defeated Isaac Doederlein in the featherweight final. He later won the 2025 IBJJF Crown at the same weight, beating João Mendes 4–2 in the final. At the No-Gi World Championship, Abate moved up to lightweight and won a second consecutive black-belt world title. In 2026, Abate added his first black-belt gi World Championship. Competing at featherweight, he defeated João Mendes in the semifinal and Sam Nagai in the final.
