Jansen Gomes Ramos

Jansen Gomes got his black belt from his father on the 2021 Worlds podium, then won black belt World titles for Checkmat in 2023, 2025 and 2026.

Biography

Jansen Gomes Ramos, nicknamed Nenego and listed in results as Jansen Gomes, is a Brazilian black belt who competes for Checkmat. He won World titles from the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) at every colored belt level, received his black belt from his father on the World Championship podium in December 2021, and went on to win the black belt World Championship in 2023, 2025 and 2026. Born in Rio de Janeiro in 2001, he took up jiu-jitsu in early childhood, following the lead of his father, the black belt Antônio Carlos "Bode", and of his older brother, Jonata Gomes. Guided by his father and by coach Ricardo Vieira, he grew into a prominent figure in the jiu-jitsu social project Vieira ran for local young people, and he trained as well at Copacabana's Fightzone Academy, the Checkmat headquarters. BJJ Heroes traces his lineage back through his father, Ricardo Vieira and Romero Cavalcanti to Rolls Gracie and, before him, Hélio and Carlos Gracie. It gives his father, Ricardo Vieira and Leonardo "Leo" Vieira as the teachers behind his black belt; FloGrappling's athlete page names his father and Leo Vieira. BJJ Heroes dates the start of his international career to purple belt, when he began making trips to the United States for the IBJJF's major events and trained there with Checkmat coaches Leo Vieira and Lucas Leite. He won the World Championship at purple belt in 2019 and at brown belt in 2021, the year he also won both his weight class and the open-weight absolute division as a brown belt at the Pan Championship and the No-Gi World Championship. The 2021 Worlds were held in December, and that is where the promotion came: with Jansen on the top step of the podium, his father knotted the black belt around his waist. He was 20. His first year at black belt, 2022, included a turn on FloGrappling's reality series Who's Next: Submission Fighter Challenge. He went to Tim Spriggs' Red Team as a first-round pick and made it to the semifinals. There Izaak Michell finished him with a heel hook from the 50-50 leg position after ten minutes. BJJ Heroes also lists 2022 wins at the CBJJ Brazilian No-Gi Nationals and the AJP Grand Slam in Rio de Janeiro, and a loss to Gustavo Batista at that year's World Championship. Until the 2023 World Championship he had usually competed at medium-heavyweight, the 88.3 kg division that BJJ Heroes lists as his weight class. In 2023 he won the European Championship in that division and took silver at the Pan Championship, where Batista beat him in the final on advantages after a 2-2 score. For the Worlds he dropped to middleweight. Seeded third, he won with a short choke against Lucas Brito and a choke from the back against Alexandre Jesus, then beat Tye Ruotolo 4-0 on points in the semifinal. Ruotolo, the 2022 lightweight champion, had moved up a division. In the final Gomes met Tainan Dalpra, the two-time middleweight champion, who had yet to lose a match on IBJJF mats at black belt. The score stayed 0-0, and Gomes won the title 2-0 on advantages, the tiebreaker when points are level. The IBJJF later described that final as historic, and JitsMagazine ranked the title as the biggest result of his career up to that point. FloGrappling pointed out that he had beaten two defending World champions on the way, and noted that Checkmat won two black belt World titles that year, his and Sam Nagai's. Interviewed by the IBJJF in December 2023, he described his game in his own terms. He said he liked takedowns, throws, passing and finishing on the back, that he always tried to push the pace, and that his no-gi game stayed close to his gi game. He had been refining his takedowns, passing and back takes, he said, and adding kinds of passing he had rarely used before. FloGrappling's athlete page calls his passing game fast-paced and his style scrappy, and BJJ Heroes lists guard passing as his favorite position. Batista became a recurring opponent. After losing to him at the 2022 Worlds and the 2023 Pans, Gomes beat him 2-0 on points at BJJ Stars 11 in September 2023. In March 2024 he fought in a cage, headlining the jiu-jitsu main event of ADXC 3 in Balneário Camboriú, Brazil, against Portugal's Bruno Lima. He opened with a double-leg takedown, took Lima's back twice and won a unanimous decision after five three-minute rounds. Afterwards he said he had prepared in Dubai with Thiago Sá, using his training there to understand how a fight in the cage works. At the 2024 World Championship he reached the final in both medium-heavyweight and the absolute. In the open class he won four matches, two of them by submission; in the quarterfinal a takedown, a guard pass and the mount carried him to a 9-2 win over Gutemberg Pereira, and in the semifinal he beat Meyram Maquiné on points. Batista beat him in the medium-heavyweight final and Erich Munis won the absolute, so he left with two silver medals. In October 2024 he won ADXC 6's gi main event by unanimous decision over Uanderson Ferreira, and in December, at BJJ Stars 14 in São Paulo, he beat Fellipe Andrew 2-0 on points for the event's 195 lb medium-heavyweight title, having scored early from top position against Andrew's guard. In São Paulo in 2025 he entered the Brazilian National Championship, the Brasileiros, which the IBJJF noted was his first in nine years and his first at black belt. He won the medium-heavyweight title with four victories, three of them by choke from the back, and the IBJJF credited the run to constant pressure, active guard passing and a knack for reaching the back from almost any position. At the 2025 World Championship, BJJ Heroes records armbar finishes against Arthur Mariath and Paulo Merlin and a choke from the back in the round of 16 on his way through the medium-heavyweight bracket. In the semifinal an early snap-down gave him Raul Basílio's back; he then passed, reached mount and won, by a choke from the back according to BJJ Heroes. In the final he met Batista again, a year after losing the 2024 final to him. Batista went after his legs from guard; Gomes escaped, came close to passing and then hunted the back, and the advantages he collected from back-take and choke attempts decided a match that finished 0-0 on points. He also beat Batista at UFC BJJ 3 that year. The 2026 World Championship took place at the Pyramid in Long Beach, California, and he entered it as the defending medium-heavyweight champion. On the first day he won two matches by submission and the quarterfinal; he then beat Gabriel Galvão in the semifinal and finished Enderson Dias with a lapel choke in the final. In its recap the IBJJF highlighted his outside passing and back attacks across the five matches and counted the gold as his third black belt World title. After the win he said he planned a more active competition schedule in 2027.
