Sophia McDermott Drysdale

Described as Australia’s first female BJJ black belt, Sophia McDermott Drysdale carried a championship career into seminars and coaching.

Biography

Sophia McDermott Drysdale is an Australian black belt described by BJJ Heroes and her own SophiaFIT site as the first Australian woman to reach that rank. Her route into jiu-jitsu began after a background in gymnastics, when a shoulder injury ended that pursuit and sent her looking for another demanding activity. McDermott said she began BJJ in 2002. She trained at Dominance MMA, a John Will affiliate led by Cam Rowe and Dave Hart, who helped guide her from blue through brown belt. After earning Pan American medals in three consecutive years from 2005 through 2007, she moved from Australia to the United States and joined Robert Drysdale’s gym in Las Vegas. Her SophiaFIT site presents her as a multiple-time world and Pan American champion. In a first-person interview, McDermott said she also helped build Drysdale Jiu-Jitsu and Zenith with her former husband. That association belongs to an earlier chapter of her career, not a current team listing. McDermott’s present work is broader than a single academy affiliation. Through SophiaFIT, she offers jiu-jitsu seminars and workshops alongside lifestyle coaching, nutrition, and wellness events, and describes herself as a head professor.
