Jyri Manninen

Jyri Manninen moved from competition into coaching, building Buli and programmes that fit ambitious jiu-jitsu around adult life.

Biography

Jyri Manninen began Brazilian jiu-jitsu in 2004, initially focused on his own improvement. Competition soon followed, along with extended periods in Brazil under Demian Maia, progressing from blue belt to black belt. In his own account, helping another person understand something new increasingly gave him meaning alongside competing. Representing Brasa, he won adult brown-belt heavyweight bronze at the 2011 IBJJF European Championship. In 2014, he took gold for Brasa CTA at the IBJJF World No-Gi Championship in the men’s Master 1 black-belt super-heavyweight division, listed at 215 lb. No-gi competition is practised without the traditional jacket. Coaching became his profession when he took charge of Crest Professional Fighting Center’s jiu-jitsu programme in 2015. In 2021, he cofounded Buli Jiu-Jitsu in Helsinki with Joni Stenholm, Antti Lehto and Johan Kommonen. Buli lists him as its head coach; his own biography identifies him as a third-degree black belt. Questions about why people learn differently led him to study coaching beyond BJJ and train as a professional coach and mental coach. He says competitive ability and experience alone cannot make a finished coach. His coaching website describes exploring situations, testing alternatives and learning through mistakes, rather than always supplying answers. Available time, recovery, work, family, age, experience and goals inform the work. He does not seek to produce copies of his own game. Game Model maps a student’s goals, decisions, connected positions and priorities for improvement. Ongoing game-development coaching combines personal meetings with the student’s own practice and analysis of sparring videos. Road to... integrates planning, monitoring, technical and mental skills, and competition preparation around an individual goal. An over-40 group combines technical work with sparring, while keeping competition optional. Testimonials selected for his website describe how this teaching is experienced. Heikki Huttunen says the work brought coaching knowledge as well as technical instruction to Mikkeli. Jimi Miettinen describes workshops built around positional tasks and situational rounds—practice focused on particular problems—with short technical tips supporting active work. In another endorsement hosted on Manninen’s site, Rodrigo “Comprido” Medeiros identifies himself as his friend and one of his instructors, recalling his development from white belt and seeing his students compete. Manninen publicly writes that he underwent replacement surgery on both hips in spring 2026. He connects that experience to his thinking about sporting ambition within a whole adult life. His Master Athlete approach includes work, family, responsibilities and limited time in the pursuit of continued development.
