Santeri Lilius

Santeri Lilius built a coaching career between Finland and Spain, from a small Lahti gym to ADCC and Scramble Academy Spain.

Biography

Santeri Lilius is a Finnish black belt under Roger Gracie and the head of Scramble Academy Spain in Torremolinos. His work as a teacher began well before that role: in 2014, fellow Finnish competitor Emilia Tuukkanen described him as her main teacher, the person she approached with technical questions and expected direct feedback from. Born in Kärkölä in 1991 and raised in Lahti, Lilius played competitive ice hockey before taking up karate at fifteen. He began jiu-jitsu at sixteen at Kamppailulajikeskus, training under Marko Kallioinen and Raimo Posti. In a 2014 BJJ Eastern Europe interview, he remembered a group of about ten students whose hard training brought rapid improvement. His account to Attack the Back that May explained the change of sport: he had tried BJJ while recovering from an injury sustained in MMA training and discovered that he preferred it. Spain became part of his training life in 2009, when he joined Surunion Team and met Pablo Cabo. Cabo awarded him his brown belt shortly after the 2013 Europeans. By 2014, he was dividing his training between Barreto Team in Lahti and Roger Gracie Málaga. Visiting other Spanish academies gave him different partners to test his game against. Describing his silver medal at the 2014 Europeans to BJJ Eastern Europe, he recalled three submission wins before losing the adult brown-belt middleweight final to Yago de Souza on points. His game then included leg attacks, spider guard—using sleeve grips and feet on the arms to control an opponent—and berimbolos, rolling movements used to reach the back. He studied constantly. In his Attack the Back interview, he singled out Leandro Lo’s dynamic top game, Buchecha’s attacking style and Michael Langhi’s spider guard as influences. His advice to beginners was to persist and learn the fundamentals before moving on to advanced techniques. Lilius qualified as a sports instructor at the Sports Institute of Finland in 2014. According to BJJ Heroes’ biography, he accepted a coaching job in southern Spain after his studies and later opened LiliusBarnatt Martial Arts with Luke Barnatt, having saved for five years. Roger Gracie promoted him to black belt in 2015. One later student, Miko Hytönen, dates their work together to 2016: in his own biography, Hytönen describes training and teaching alongside Lilius, who awarded him his black belt in 2023. In a 2020 interview with Ikuinen Peruskurssi, Lilius explained the thinking behind IMPROVE, his new coaching service. Between eighteen and twenty-two, he had struggled to find guidance on training systematically and making BJJ a profession. IMPROVE offered individual plans, video analysis, private lessons and remote help with specific problems. During gym closures, an early beginner client received a training plan and instructions for making a practice dummy from household materials. Ffion Davies joined the project to provide online lessons and video analysis; Lilius also offered longer programmes, sometimes involving almost daily contact. He could coach in Finnish, English and Spanish. The pandemic was financially difficult for his Spanish gym. Speaking to Ikuinen Peruskurssi in February 2022, he expressed relief that the business had survived, while recalling visits from Davies, Darragh O’Conaill, Taylor Pearman and Tom Halpin. Preparing to face Jacob Couch, he identified passing the guard as a strength and described work on his wrestling and leg attacks. Training with leg-lock specialists Kamil Wilk and Mateusz Szczeciński had helped that preparation. Knowing an opponent’s strengths made him alert to particular threats, he explained, but he continued to train all parts of grappling. That year, Lilius won the professional men’s under-88kg division at the second ADCC European, Middle East and African Trial in Poland, securing a place at the world championship. Before the event, he returned to Poland for a training camp. In a September interview, he described the rounds there as valuable preparation and welcomed the opportunity to test himself against the leading competitors. A loss would carry no shame if he had delivered his best performance. Lucas Barbosa defeated him at the 2022 ADCC Worlds. Lilius also won the adult black-belt heavyweight title at the 2022 IBJJF European No-Gi Championships in Rome and took bronze in the same division at the World No-Gi Championships. Another under-88kg ADCC Trials victory followed in September 2023, qualifying him for the 2024 Worlds. His subsequent world-championship appearances included losses to Gabriel Almeida in 2024 and Chris Wojcik in 2026. Lilius now leads Scramble Academy Spain in Torremolinos. Scramble describes the Málaga-area partnership as offering gi and no-gi jiu-jitsu, wrestling and children’s BJJ, with classes serving beginners through to competitors.
