Gamila Kanew

A Berlin-born former footballer who says she largely taught herself jiu-jitsu, holds a black belt under Alain Pozo and won world medals for Germany.

Biography

Gamila Kanew, born in Berlin in 1995, is a German black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu who by her own account taught herself much of her game, then went on to win world-level grappling medals for Germany while also coaching its national team. Football came first. She started in youth football at FFV NB, played for Leipziger FC and Lokomotive Leipzig, and later turned out for 1. FC Neubrandenburg 04 in the Regionalliga. From 2015 to 2021 she was a student at the University of Greifswald, and in January 2019 the regional paper Nordkurier described how she came to jiu-jitsu there while looking for a sport at the university. She began training in November 2015, was winning tournaments in Germany within a year, and made her international debut at the 2017 IBJJF London Winter Open, where she took gold. Her own account of those years is of an athlete without a coach. In a 2021 interview she said she mostly taught herself, went to most tournaments alone, put in more than thirty hours of training a week with nobody in her corner, and had a hard time paying for competition and finding sponsors. Competing, she said, was how she found out whether her game plan worked. During a period of study at the University of California, Berkeley, in 2018 and 2019, she trained at Ralph Gracie Berkeley under Professor Eduardo Fraga, who she said helped her develop as an athlete. Nordkurier reported that her trainer in the United States spotted her talent within a month, backed her, and let her stay in his caravan without paying rent, and the paper credited her with 16 medals from the trip, two of them world titles. Her German Wikipedia article, which supplies most of the competitive record in this profile, lists three golds at the 2018 JJWL World Championship in Azusa. The colored-belt results in that article include bronze at the 2018 IBJJF European Championship as a white belt, bronze at the 2018 IBJJF No-Gi Worlds and gold at the 2019 Abu Dhabi Grand Slam in Moscow as a blue belt, and gold at the 2021 AJP European Continentals as a purple belt. Her first Abu Dhabi World Professional Championship, in 2019, brought a silver medal; at the 2021 edition, she said, she lost her opening match on an advantage and left without a medal. Earlier in her career she competed for Team Globetrotters and, in the United States, for Ralph Gracie Berkeley. Since 2020 she has represented the ZR Team Association, and she has trained under Professor Alain Pozo, whom she has called her father figure in jiu-jitsu. German Wikipedia and her own website both list her black belt under Pozo, and the article gives her rank as first-degree black belt. As a brown belt in 2022 she won the IBJJF European Championship No-Gi and took bronze at the Gi Europeans and the No-Gi Worlds. At black belt, competing at middleweight, she won No-Gi bronze at the IBJJF Europeans in 2023 and 2024 and Gi gold in 2025. That same year she took bronze in both her weight class and the open class at the IBJJF Campeonato Brasileiro in the gi and at the Pan-American No-Gi championship. In October 2021 she joined the grappling national squad of the German Wrestling Federation. At the UWW Grappling World Championship in Belgrade that year, which German Wikipedia describes as Germany's first team appearance at the event, she won two medals, a bronze and a silver; her own website lists the bronze in the gi and the silver in no-gi. At the 2022 World Championship in Pontevedra she won silver in both gi and no-gi while also serving as national coach for the men's and women's teams, and the German women finished first in the no-gi team standings and third in the gi. In March 2023 she returned from the European Championships in Bucharest with a no-gi bronze, again as national coach, at an event the article says no German team had entered before. In August 2023 she won gi bronze at 64 kg at the Worlds in Warsaw, and on 23 October 2023 she won the gi 64 kg title at the World Combat Games in Riyadh, which the article calls Germany's first gold in any discipline at those games. At home she took five golds and the open weight classes at the 2021 German grappling championships in Limburg, and in April 2022 she took two golds at the German ADCC championships, in the professional division and the open class. She had also briefly been a newaza squad athlete for the German Ju-Jutsu Association in 2021. Her professional grappling record includes a win at the Honor Submission Challenge in Cagliari on 1 July 2023 and a bronze medal after five matches at the 2024 ADCC European, African and Middle East Trials in Zagreb. At the Ocean Pro championship she has won titles at both under 65 kg and over 65 kg, and in 2025 she finished second at the Ocean final in Cagliari after losing the lightweight final on a decision to Sarah Galvão. In September 2025 she competed at Polaris Pro Grappling, as the first German woman to do so according to the article, and lost to Injana Goodman. Coaching has run alongside the competing. Her coaching page, which carries a 2023 date, lists her as head coach of ZR Team Germany from November 2019, head coach of the German UWW national grappling team from June 2022, and state squad grappling coach for the GAMMAF federation of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania from April 2021; her state team page says she teaches grappling to that squad's MMA and grappling athletes. The same page lists earlier posts teaching grappling and self-defense in university sport at Greifswald from 2017 to early 2022, jiu-jitsu at PSV Neubrandenburg from late 2019 to early 2020, and jiu-jitsu at UFC Gym St. Pauli in Hamburg over the winter of 2022 to 2023. In 2021 she described running her own academy in a small town near the Baltic Sea, after studying to become a teacher, and German Wikipedia names her as chair and head trainer of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu ZR Team Greifswald e.V., a club she helped found. The city of Greifswald gave her its badge of honor for sporting commitment on 14 November 2019, and in January 2022 she signed the city's book of honor.
