Roberto Maia

Roberto Maia was among Gracie Barra teachers who left Brazil for Boston; Kenny Florian, John Connors, and John Fain are documented as his black belts.

Biography

Roberto Maia’s place in Boston jiu-jitsu is preserved through people who carried parts of his teaching into their own work. Gracie Barra’s history names him among the organization’s early teachers to leave Brazil for Boston. Boston Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Woburn’s profile identifies Maia as the founder of Boston Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, established in 1995, and lists his current gym in Bellingham, Massachusetts. UFC describes Kenny Florian as a jiu-jitsu black belt under Maia. John Connors says Maia awarded him a black belt at Boston Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in October 2006; Connors had begun operating his own academy the previous year. At Triumph BJJ, John Fain’s biography says he opened the Nashua academy in 2007 with Maia’s support and received his black belt from Maia in 2011.
