Fernanda Yukari Makiyama Cristo

Fernanda Cristo grew up in her family’s Japanese academy, became a world-level black belt, and now represents Celso Ricardo New Level School.

Biography

Fernanda Yukari Makiyama Cristo was born in Brazil, raised in Japan, and introduced to jiu-jitsu through her parents’ academy. Her father, Rogério Cristo, guided her from childhood competition to black belt, while Fernanda also began teaching inside the family gym before reaching that rank. She has since competed internationally in both gi and no-gi. The SJJIF lists her under Brazil, while her current IBJJF record identifies her as a black belt representing Celso Ricardo New Level School. Cristo was born on October 1, 2001. A biography published by Digitsu reports that her Brazilian father and mother of Japanese descent were living in Japan but traveled to Brazil for the birth. When Fernanda was five months old, the family returned to Japan, where she was raised. Jiu-jitsu was already part of the household. Rogério had trained before his daughter was born, and Fernanda’s mother joined him in the training room when Fernanda was one. Her parents later founded Evox Academy in Toyokawa. Growing up around their practices and competitions, Fernanda entered its children’s program at four and competed for the first time at five. The academy gave her an early place to contribute as well as train. In a 2019 interview, Evox athlete Diego Henrique described Rogério as the regular instructor and said that Fernanda and her mother, Márcia, taught the morning and children’s classes. Fernanda was still a colored-belt competitor, making teaching part of her development before black belt. Her competition record also expanded beyond the family academy. Cristo won juvenile Pan and World gold in 2018, followed by European titles at adult purple belt in 2019 and 2020. Her 2019 season also included Asian gold and open-class silver, along with bronze medals at the Pan and World Championships. Rogério promoted Cristo to black belt on July 24, 2021, when she was nineteen. Shortly afterward, she won both medium-heavyweight and open-class gold at the JBJJF All Japan Championship in her black-belt debut. At the 2021 World Championship, Jiu-Jitsu Navi described a concrete example of Cristo's guard work in her semifinal against Ana Carolina Vieira. Cristo pulled guard and used lasso and spider controls while defending Vieira’s passing attacks. Lasso guard wraps a leg around an opponent’s arm to manage distance, while spider guard uses sleeve grips and the feet to control the opponent’s arms. Cristo returned to a major black-belt podium in 2022. At the IBJJF World Championship, she again reached the medium-heavyweight semifinal, where Vieira defeated her. Cristo finished with a bronze medal in the division. Japan remained part of how she understood that progress. After winning the Marianas Open on Guam for a second time in 2024, Cristo credited her roots in Japan with leading her to that point. Competing for Brazil and representing Evox BJJ, she also received the event’s $10,000 prize. The same year, the SJJIF record lists her as its adult black-belt world champion at medium-heavyweight and in the open class for Evox. Her 2025 results showed range across formats and divisions. Cristo won the middleweight and open-weight divisions at Marianas Pro Tokyo, then took middleweight gold and open-weight silver at the Marianas Open. In IBJJF competition, she earned European Championship bronze at medium-heavyweight in the gi. Her no-gi season included medium-heavyweight silver at the Pan and middleweight bronze at the World Championship. Cristo continued competing in 2026. The IBJJF record shows middleweight gold at the Atlanta Winter Open, followed by medium-heavyweight gold and open-class bronze at the Denver Open. That current record lists Celso Ricardo New Level School as her team. Her 2024 records instead list Evox BJJ, the family academy in Toyokawa.
