Marco Barbosa

Marco "Barbosinha" Barbosa is a judo and jiu-jitsu black belt whose path from judo competition led to teaching through Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu and B9.

Biography

Marco Antônio "Barbosinha" Barbosa, whom Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu's academy history identifies as born in Araçatuba, São Paulo, in 1968, is a black belt in both judo and jiu-jitsu. He began judo at thirteen and moved to Bastos for intensive training under Uichiro Umakakeba, from whom he received a judo black belt. Much of this early chronology comes from Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu's own history and Barbosa's profile. After two years of training in Japan, he returned to Brazil, joined the Brazilian judo team, and competed at the 1991 Pan American Games in Cuba and World Championships in Spain. His first documented introduction to jiu-jitsu came in 1992 through his training partner Zaga. He then trained with Companhia Paulista in classes led by Roberto Godoy and Jorge Macaco Patino. His academy profile places the start of his educational practice in 1995, when he was a purple belt and his team began. In 1999, IBJJF listed Barbosa, representing Godoi/Macaco, as the adult male black-belt featherweight champion at the Brazilian Championship. Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu is identified as Barbosa's team and as the São Paulo academy from which he developed competitors. Cia Paulista's history also names Marco Barbosa of B9 among the instructors trained within Waldomiro Perez Jr.'s philosophical system.
