Shawn Hammonds

Shawn Hammonds is a Nashville head instructor, team leader, and fourth-degree black belt in the lineage between Lloyd Irvin and John Salter.

Biography

Shawn Hammonds is a fourth-degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and the head instructor and team leader at his namesake Nashville academy; his documented lineage runs from Lloyd Irvin through Hammonds to John Salter. Salter moved to Nashville to train under Hammonds and Ed Clay. BJJ Heroes says their coaching helped take Salter through brown and black belt. Salter's current academy biography records that he earned his black belt under Hammonds in 2013. That Nashville coaching period is separate from the belt lineage documented for Hammonds: BJJ Heroes places Lloyd Irvin above him and identifies Hammonds as Salter's black-belt instructor. Hammonds also competed. Official IBJJF results place him first in the Master 2 male black-belt medium-heavy category at the 2009 Pan Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi championship. His academy credits him with two Pan Am gold medals, World and Pan Am titles for students he coached, and repeated high team rankings across several grappling circuits. The association carrying his name extends beyond Nashville. Its official affiliates page says TAMA Martial Arts joined in 2010. Affiliated academies also appear in Ohio, West Virginia, and Kansas. In Nashville, Music City Martial Arts presents its facility as the headquarters for Shawn Hammonds programs and traces its jiu-jitsu instruction through the Shawn Hammonds BJJ Association. His role is visible at two scales: Salter earned a black belt under him in 2013, while schools in several states are affiliated with the association bearing his name.
