David Onuma

David Onuma is a British BJJ black belt whose adaptable game, competition record, and principle-led teaching define his work.

Biography

David Onuma is a British Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and instructor whose career combines an adaptable game with a principle-led approach to training. Born in London in 1967, he followed a belt path through several teachers before building his work around both competition and instruction. Onuma began Brazilian jiu-jitsu with John Machado in 1998 and received his blue belt in 1999. He later trained at Roger Brooking's London academy, earning his purple belt in 2005. Ricardo Vieira awarded him his brown belt in 2008. In January 2010, Onuma received his black belt through Thiago Borges on behalf of Vieira and Rodrigo Cabral. Vieira had given him the nickname Malandro in 2004, which Onuma explained as a description of a rounded, adaptable jiu-jitsu game. His teaching idea was similarly deliberate. Onuma described “intelligent combat” as hard work organized around principles, goals, and a game plan—not repetition without direction. Onuma's own 2013 medal list records European Championship gold medals at purple belt in 2008, brown belt in 2009 and 2010, and black belt in 2013. It also includes brown-belt absolute bronze in 2009 and black-belt no-gi bronze in 2012; the list is his published account rather than an independently audited career total. Official IBJJF results provide a later fixed point: at the 2016 World Jiu-Jitsu No-Gi Championship, he placed second in the master-4 black-belt middleweight division and joint third in its open class while representing CFS BJJ. CFS is the documented system and team in that competitive and instructional record, and its archive identifies Onuma as CFS BJJ's head instructor. North 12 lists Onuma as its head instructor and program director. Its profile also records experience in Filipino martial arts, Jeet Kune Do, kickboxing, Maphilindo Silat, and combat submission wrestling. The range is broad, but Onuma's BJJ path—from Machado through Vieira, Borges, and Cabral—remains the center of the story.
