Darson Barrington Hemmings

Darson Hemmings developed his jiu-jitsu across Ontario and the United States, combining international competition with teaching.

Biography

Darson Hemmings moved from no-gi training in Ontario to full-time study with Ryan Hall in the United States, then built a competitive career in both gi and no-gi jiu-jitsu. Alongside that career, he became a training partner other competitors learned from and an instructor working across several Ontario gyms. Born in Montego Bay, Jamaica, in 1989, Darson Barrington Hemmings moved to London, Ontario, as a child. BJJ Heroes traces his early training from karate at nine through high-school wrestling and MMA. Sam Zakula and Misha Cirkunov introduced him to no-gi grappling at Xtreme Couture, and Rob DiCenso awarded him his purple belt. Training full-time with Hall brought him into the gi. Shawn Williams later promoted him to brown belt, and he subsequently joined Toronto BJJ. His first major titles came before black belt. In 2012, he won the adult purple-belt light-featherweight division at the World No-Gi Championship. That year he also won the ADCC North American qualifier in San Diego, in the division the event report listed as under 65 kilograms. At ADCC in Beijing in 2013, competing at under 66 kilograms, he lost his opening match to Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles by rear-naked choke. In the gi, Hemmings won adult brown-belt roosterweight gold at the 2013 Pan Championship and light-featherweight gold at the 2014 European Championship. His training was also making an impression at Open Mat: in a January 2014 interview, Eric Cong Phan credited working with Hemmings with helping his own jiu-jitsu mature. Hemmings took adult brown-belt light-featherweight silver at both the European and Pan championships in 2015. The Pan final was against Mikey Musumeci, who described the match against his friend as probably his toughest to that point. On December 5 that year, Jorge Britto promoted Hemmings to black belt at Toronto BJJ. Looking back in a November 2021 Thicc Boy Fight Club interview, Hemmings recalled living around gyms and fight houses to spend more time training. Working with unfamiliar partners at different academies had helped prepare him for competition. He described an interest that had shifted from wanting to fight toward studying the art, and said jiu-jitsu had given him confidence and a way to approach learning other activities. That study included watching Marcelo Garcia’s matches, drawn to his effectiveness against larger opponents. Hemmings recalled years spent predominantly playing guard and using berimbolo. Teaching, he said, had sharpened his own jiu-jitsu, and he encouraged students to discover new techniques. At the time, he described teaching at Legends MMA in Brampton and Absolute BJJ in Hamilton, with private lessons in Toronto. Winning an IBJJF gi world title remained his competitive ambition. His black-belt results include Pan bronze medals in Master 1 light-featherweight in 2019 and Master 1 featherweight in 2023. At the 2026 World Master Championship, he earned bronze in Master 2 light-featherweight, registered with Cicero Costha Internacional. Yorkdale Martial Arts Academy now lists him among its Brazilian jiu-jitsu instructors as a second-degree black belt.
