Brazilian black belt João Gabriel Rocha competed for Soul Fighters and won Pan ultra-heavyweight titles in 2017 and 2018.

Biography

João Gabriel Rocha is a Brazilian black belt in jiu-jitsu who competed for Soul Fighters, later led an Alliance team in Dallas, and won Pan and Brazilian national titles. IBJJF results and reporting provide most of the competition record here. Rocha recalls starting jiu-jitsu at a summer camp at Tijuca Tênis Clube when he was about three. At the 2008 Worlds, competing for Soul Fighters, he won the juvenile blue-belt heavyweight division and took silver in the juvenile blue-belt open class. He placed second in the adult purple-belt medium heavyweight division in 2009 and won the adult brown-belt heavyweight division in 2011. Graciemag described Rafael "Formiga" Barbosa as Rocha's mentor and reported that Barbosa coached him at the 2011 Worlds. Rocha has held a black belt since 2013. He won the super-heavyweight division at the 2013 Brazilian national championship and the ultra-heavyweight division in 2015. At the Pan championships, he won the black-belt ultra-heavyweight division in 2017 and 2018, with an open-class silver in 2017. He also took silver in both the ultra-heavyweight and open-class divisions at the 2017 No-Gi Worlds. At the 2020 American National, he won gold in both the ultra-heavyweight division and the open class. In December 2019, Rocha, Barbosa and Leandro "Tatu" Escobar announced that they were leaving Soul Fighters and creating Double Five JJ. IBJJF reported in January 2023 that Rocha was leading an Alliance Jiu Jitsu team in Dallas, Texas. Rocha awarded his younger brother Pedro a black belt in 2019. Pedro later credited his older brother with helping and motivating him in training. On December 17, 2022, Rocha promoted Steffen Banta to black belt. At the 2023 Austin Winter Open, Rocha won four gi matches to take the open-class title. He described it as his first IBJJF competition in three years. Later that year, Rocha and Pedro reached the Pan No-Gi open-class final, with Pedro taking gold.
