Alexandre Paiva

Alliance co-founder Alexandre Paiva combined early teaching with a 1999 IBJJF World Championship title.

Biography

Alexandre Paiva’s documented Brazilian jiu-jitsu story runs from training rooms in Ipanema to the founding of Alliance. Alliance’s official history says that he began training with Professor Jacaré in Ipanema in 1983 and received his black belt from Jacaré in 1991. It also says that he then taught at Jacaré’s academy, the Equipe 1 Academy in Ipanema, and the Clube Federal Strike Academy. In 1993, Paiva helped found Alliance with Romero Cavalcanti and Fabio Gurgel, according to an IBJJF report. Six years later, the IBJJF’s official results for the 1999 World Jiu-Jitsu Championship list him, representing Alliance, in first place in the Adult Black Male Middle division. The same IBJJF report, published in 2026, described Alliance at that time as having more than 300 academies in over 29 countries.
