Markku Juntunen

Finland's first BJJ black belt, Markku Juntunen paired 2011 IBJJF Master International gold with a documented Takado teaching line.

Biography

Markku Juntunen reached a national milestone on June 17, 2004, when the Finnish Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation records him receiving his black belt under Alexandre Paiva. A separate account identifies him as Finland's first Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. The federation's register places him at Takado, while two other sources associate him with Alliance. The federation's historical board panel also names Juntunen of Takado as its chair in 2004. Juntunen added a major result of his own in 2011. The IBJJF's official results list him in first place at the Master International Jiu-Jitsu IBJJF Championship, in the black-belt Master 5 men's middleweight division. The Finnish federation's register dates his third degree to September 6, 2014, and lists his fourth degree on April 14, 2017. Jesse Urholin is one documented branch of Juntunen's teaching line. BJJ Heroes' profile of Urholin describes Juntunen as the coach who guided him through the belt system. Urholin's record includes ADCC European Trials titles in 2014 and 2016, as well as Finnish national titles. The federation separately records Juntunen awarding him his black belt on June 12, 2016, while Urholin's published lineage confirms the Paiva–Juntunen–Urholin sequence without adding promotion dates. The federation register also links Juntunen to later black-belt promotions and degree updates for several Takado students through 2026. That record places his work in both competition and teaching; the federation now lists him among its honorary presidents.
