Thomas David DeBlass

From Ricardo Almeida black belt to UFC veteran and Ocean County BJJ coach, Tom DeBlass built his career in New Jersey.

Biography

Tom DeBlass is an American Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and New Jersey coach whose career has also included professional MMA. Born Thomas David DeBlass in New Brunswick in 1982, he first trained in taekwondo and competed in the long jump. An injury ended that path when he was about 18 and brought him to jiu-jitsu. DeBlass began learning under Eric Colon, then joined Ricardo Almeida's academy as a white belt and progressed through the belts under Almeida. By 2012, the UFC described him as a black belt who trained and taught alongside Almeida and Renzo Gracie in New Jersey. His UFC debut came that year when he accepted a short-notice fight against Cyrille Diabate. UFC's account described it as the first defeat of his eight-fight professional career. By the time ONE Championship announced his signing in 2020, it credited him with a 9–2 MMA record and heavyweight and light-heavyweight titles in Ring of Combat. The announcement also noted that he had stepped away from MMA after defeating Jason Lambert in November 2013 to refocus on jiu-jitsu. It announced a return, but the available sources do not establish that he went on to compete for ONE. DeBlass's influence also runs through the people he coached. Garry Tonon trained under him in New Jersey before later working with John Danaher in New York. DeBlass's own professional resume identifies him as the owner of Ocean County BJJ and head of the TDBJJ affiliation, as well as the author of *How You Bear It* and founder of Buddies Over Bullies.
