Michael Jalen Fonacier

Los Angeles-born Alliance black belt who won the IBJJF Worlds at roosterweight in 2025 and 2026, and whose first three UFC BJJ wins came by heel hook.

Biography

Michael Jalen Fonacier, who competes as Jalen Fonacier and is nicknamed "The Future", is a Los Angeles-born black belt from Alliance who won the IBJJF World Championship at roosterweight (127 lb) in 2025 and again in 2026. The 2025 title came when he was 19 and a rookie at black belt. His first three bouts in the professional no-gi league UFC BJJ all ended in heel hook wins. Fonacier was born in 2005 and grew up in Los Angeles. He was about two when he started training, under Rey Diogo at a Los Angeles affiliate of the Carlson Gracie Academy. As a yellow belt he wanted to compete more, and he went looking for a team with a bigger presence at tournaments. That led him to Alliance LA, the group run by Rubens Charles, known as Cobrinha, where he progressed from yellow belt to black. Fonacier used his nickname on social media for several years during his climb through the belts. BJJ Heroes lists open guard and the crab ride, a position used to get behind an opponent, as his favorite positions. After his second world title, IBJJF's report relayed Cobrinha's view that the result had grown out of almost twenty years of sacrifice and the pursuit of perfection. In the IBJJF juvenile division, according to BJJ Heroes, he won the Pan Championship in 2021 and 2022, both times in his weight class and in the absolute (open weight), and took the absolute at the 2022 World Championship. As a purple belt in 2023 he topped IBJJF's purple belt rankings in the gi and in no-gi, and won the World No-Gi and Pan No-Gi titles. In 2024, at brown belt, he won the Pans and the Worlds, and he received his black belt under Cobrinha on May 31, 2024, while still a teenager. FloGrappling's ranking of the brown belts promoted at that year's Worlds put him at number two, and suggested he could be a World medal contender at black belt the following year. As a black belt, he reached the final of the 2025 European Open and lost to Yuri Hendrex on points. At the Pan Championship in Kissimmee, Florida, that March, he beat the reigning world champion, Carlos Alberto "Bebeto" Oliveira, on the way to the final, and there he reversed the European result, beating Hendrex by referee decision to take the title. BJJ Heroes picked him out among Alliance's rookie black belts, and FloGrappling moved the 19-year-old from sixth to first in its roosterweight black belt ranking. At the World Championship in Long Beach in June 2025, BJJ Heroes' records show him winning with a choke from the back and with a triangle armlock against Oziel Santos, edging Thalison Soares in the semifinal on a single advantage with the score 0-0, and beating Bebeto Oliveira 12-8 in the final. An advantage is the tiebreaker referees award for nearly completed scoring moves or submissions. MMA Mania reported that the title made him "the first Filipino black belt world champion", and FloGrappling used the same description in the title of an interview filmed moments after his win. MMA Mania, which called him a Filipino-American grappler, later put him at number two in its 2025 awards for male breakthrough grapplers. The same year he went into professional no-gi. For his first two bouts, at UFC BJJ 2 and 3, he moved up a division and finished Everton Teixeira, a two-time no-gi world champion, and Pedro Nakano, both by inside heel hook and both in under a minute. MMA Mania wrote that he had reportedly started learning heel hooks, a leg lock not allowed in the gi, from Mikey Musumeci weeks earlier. After UFC BJJ 3 in October 2025, it noted that the 20-year-old had previously concentrated on the gi and, by his own account, had only lately begun working on no-gi leg locks. At UFC BJJ 5 in Las Vegas in February 2026 he caught Bebeto Oliveira, whom he had already beaten at the 2025 Pans, in a heel hook after 19 seconds. MMA Mania called it the fastest submission in UFC BJJ up to then, and counted all three of his wins in the promotion among its four quickest finishes. After that third straight win at bantamweight he argued that UFC BJJ should add a flyweight division, where he could compete at his natural weight, and named João Miyao as an opponent he wanted. Musumeci, the promotion's bantamweight champion and his teammate, had already called for a flyweight division for him. At UFC BJJ 10 in Las Vegas in August 2026, he won a unanimous decision over Mourece Ramirez. In the gi, he won the 2026 European Championship in Lisbon with three submissions: a choke from the back against Roger Rodrigues, an omoplata against Samuel Marquez and, in the final, an armbar against Tadiyah Danforth. FloGrappling then named him as one of the athletes who could still complete an IBJJF Grand Slam, which it defines as a Worlds title followed by the next season's Europeans, Pans and Brasileiros. At the Pans he lost a quarterfinal to Marcos Gomes on points. At the 2026 World Championship, again in Long Beach, he was the defending champion in a division MMA Mania counted among the three deepest of the event, with more than 30 entrants and at least three former world champions. He won three times by submission on the opening day, beat Hendrex on points in the semifinal and met former world champion Thalison Soares of AOJ in the final. A straight footlock attempt earned him an advantage, and that margin held to the end, giving him a second consecutive world title.
