Thibaut Olivier

He met Brazilian jiu-jitsu on a UFC videotape in 1995, and for years his only training partners were his two brothers; the medals came later.

Biography

Thibaut Olivier, born in 1977, found Brazilian jiu-jitsu at the end of 1995 on the first Ultimate Fighting Championship videotapes, and took his first class in June 1996 at a seminar in Paris with Royce and Rorion Gracie. By his academy’s account there was no jiu-jitsu club in France to go to, so he trained with his two brothers, working from occasional seminars and instructional videos. Almost everything recorded about him comes from two pages of his own, the instructor page at his academy, Gokudo, and his coach page at the Cercle Tissier; the one independent source used here is the French federation’s register of IBJJF-certified black belts. In 2001 he joined the Bittan Academy, newly opened in Saint-Ouen-l’Aumône, where Patrick Bittan and Flavio Behring trained him. He was a blue belt within two months and won his first competition, against French competitors who included two instructors. The purple belt followed the Hotblood cup: he finished his first three opponents, then lost on points in the semi-final to Olavo Belo, a student of Royler Gracie. As a brown belt he went to Brazil, preparing at Brasa in Rio de Janeiro with Rodrigo "Comprido" Medeiros and Ricardo Vieira for the 2006 world championship. In that first competition in Brazil he submitted his opening opponent and lost on points in the second round to Gilbert "Durinho" Burns. The black belt came after he returned to France. His academy’s page says it was awarded by Flavio Behring; his coach page places it after the homecoming and names no one. Which degree that belt now carries is unsettled. Both of his own pages state a fourth degree. The CFJJB register of IBJJF-certified black belts in France enters him under third degree, as "Thibaut Olivier (Gokudo)", and enters nobody at all under fourth. That register carries no date anywhere in it, so it records a certification made at some point rather than his standing today. With his brothers Maxime and Rodolphe Olivier he formed their own academy, Gokudo. His academy’s page also has him taking over the running of Le Cercle, a club in Vincennes. His coach page records that since the start of 2017 he has run the Brazilian jiu-jitsu section of the Cercle Tissier, teaching there with the rest of the technical team. For the ten years after Gokudo was formed he split his time between teaching and competing, entering events under federations including the IBJJF, Abu Dhabi Pro and NAGA, and from 2012 the kimono brand MUAE sponsored him on the strength of his results. Both pages summarize his black-belt record as his own list rather than a federation record, with no divisions, weight classes or opponents given, and the two lists differ. The academy page has ten adult results between 2009 and 2017: seven golds and three bronzes. The coach page has twelve over the same span, adding a JUST JJB title in 2016 and a second place at the French Nationals in 2014. Both carry CFJJB French championship golds in 2012, 2015 and 2016, the CFJJB Pro League in 2015, NAGA Europe in 2012, a Spirit Challenge Pro win in 2011, and bronze at the IBJJF Asian Open in 2013 and the IBJJF Europeans in 2009. The 2010 title is named twice over, Challenge Abu Dhabi Pro Europe on one page and AJP Abu Dhabi London Grand Slam on the other. Two placings on the coach page, third in 2017 and second in 2014, are marked "closing with brother", the page’s own term for a bracket settled between team-mates rather than fought out.
