Guto Monteiro founded Associação Monteiro in Manaus in 1988 and was one of four brothers who gave Xande Ribeiro his first jiu-jitsu lessons.

Biography

Adriano Augusto Braga "Guto" Monteiro is a Manaus-based coral-belt jiu-jitsu instructor and the founder of Associação Monteiro, a school he established in 1988. He recalled in 2013 that the academy began with ten boys training in the backyard of his home. By then, the association had 18 affiliated academies and about 1,000 students, according to a Globo Esporte report. Monteiro credited perseverance and the work of his athletes and teachers for its development. His brothers Carlos Fábio "Binho," Yano Jr., and Lúcio also worked with him on the association. Xande Ribeiro took his first jiu-jitsu lessons in 1991 at the Monteiro brothers' home academy, learning from all four brothers. He later won the IBJJF adult black-belt open-class world title in 2006 and 2008. In his own account, Omar Salum arrived at Associação Monteiro on February 4, 1994, when Binho was teaching there. A 2022 A Crítica article placed Paulo Coelho, Luís Neto, Antônio Neto, and Ronnie Melo among the association's early generation of champions and reported a reunion led by Guto and Binho. Manaus city hall named William Abecassis and Carlos Henrique among five association athletes it said Guto had trained in 2014. Monteiro was promoted to a red-and-black coral belt on November 17, 2025. His brother Binho, also a coral belt, tied it around his waist. That November, A Crítica described Guto as an active leader in black-belt training at Associação Monteiro and said he had spent nearly 32 years as a black belt.
