Shimon Mochizuki

As of 2026, Danish BJJ black belt Shimon Mochizuki is Arte Suave's head coach, with a lineage through Leo Vieira.

Biography

Shimon Mochizuki is a Danish Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt whose career connects Denmark's early BJJ scene with the growth of Arte Suave in Copenhagen. Born in Gentofte on February 6, 1975, he received his black belt from Leonardo "Leo" Vieira in 2008. BJJ Heroes describes him as the first Dane to reach that rank, although no independent federation record establishing that priority was found. Mochizuki's route into BJJ began with weekly travel to Malmö in 2001 to train under Peter Blackwell while he continued practicing in Copenhagen. A 2013 interview introduction says he helped Blackwell open a Copenhagen school, then started his own academy after Blackwell withdrew. Arte Suave's account dates the club's beginning to 2002, following those trips by Mochizuki and a training partner, and separately credits Blackwell with starting the Copenhagen club. Vieira's influence extended beyond the belt promotion. Mochizuki identified Leo and Rico Vieira as the two people who most shaped his jiu-jitsu, and Arte Suave identifies itself as part of the CheckMat organization. As of September 7, 2026, the academy's instructor directory lists Mochizuki as its BJJ head coach; a 2024 article under his name also identified him as Arte Suave's head instructor. Competition forms one part of that record. Representing CheckMat in 2012, Mochizuki won the Master 2 male black-belt medium-heavy division at the London International Open and placed second in the same division at the European IBJJF No-Gi Championship. His account of coaching puts the team ahead of any single competitor. In the 2013 interview, Mochizuki credited Arte Suave's competitive culture to early teachers Blackwell and Bobby Sundel, as well as to giving students enough opportunity to train. He described BJJ as a team sport sustained by social ties and mutual support—an outlook that helps explain both his competitive work and his continuing role at the academy.
