Joachim Christensen

Copenhagen's Joachim Christensen won MMA titles in Sweden and Germany, reached the UFC at 37, and still competes as a black-belt masters jiu-jitsu athlete.

Biography

Joachim Christensen is a Danish black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and a former UFC light heavyweight. Born in Copenhagen on 7 November 1978, he has competed for the city's Arte Suave club on jiu-jitsu mats and in mixed martial arts cages from the early 2000s into the 2020s. He grew up in the city. According to Wikipedia, he was a social worker and also a soldier in the Danish army during the years he was fighting professionally. On the Arte Suave instructors page he says he came to combat sports from elite swimming and tennis, and that he took up Brazilian jiu-jitsu and submission wrestling in 2003. The club's results list then follows his ranks through the tournaments he entered: blue belt in 2003 and 2006, purple in 2007 and 2008, and brown from 2009 to 2011. In 2012 one entry still carries a brown-belt label, while his Swedish Open entry that year is at black belt. The list shows the belt he competed at, not when he was promoted. His mixed martial arts career ran alongside those years. The club's list includes a Nordic C-Shooto entry in 2005 and a light heavyweight championship at Adrenaline 2 in 2008. Wikipedia describes him as a Scandinavian and European C-Shooto champion and places him on the European circuit and in Middle East promotions before the UFC. In May 2014 he won the vacant Superior Challenge light heavyweight title in Helsingborg, Sweden, on a split decision over Matti Makela, and a year later in Malmö he kept it with another split decision, against Max Nunes. In November 2015 he added the German MMA Championship light heavyweight belt, stopping Jonas Billstein in the first round. The UFC signed him in 2016, when he was 37. He debuted in Portland, Oregon, on 1 October 2016 and lost to Henrique da Silva by armbar. In January 2017 in Phoenix he knocked out Bojan Mihajlović in the third round. Two first-round losses followed that year, to Gadzhimurad Antigulov by rear-naked choke at UFC 211 in May and to Dominick Reyes by TKO in June. UFC.com still lists him in its light heavyweight division as not fighting. After the UFC he fought for Absolute Championship Berkut in November 2017 and lost by first-round knockout. He challenged Stephan Puetz for the German MMA Championship title in March 2019 and was submitted with an arm-triangle choke, then beat Miloš Petrášek by majority decision at Oktagon 15 that November. The last fight on his Wikipedia record took place in Dubai on 6 November 2021, a first-round TKO loss to Evgeny Erokhin. On the jiu-jitsu side he has kept competing. From 2022 to 2026 the club lists him in black-belt masters divisions in the ultra-heavy and open categories, including Master 4 at IBJJF events from 2024, while his 2025 and 2026 Danish Open entries are in Master 1. The same page credits him with 97 medals by its own count. On the instructors page he says he teaches BJJ, submission wrestling, Thai boxing and MMA, and trains the first three of them daily.
