Pål Magnus Bjørlo

Pål Magnus Bjørlo coaches Nesodden Grappling in Norway and has covered Nordic fighters for MMA Viking.

Biography

Pål Magnus Bjørlo is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and coach at Nesodden Grappling in Norway. Alongside his work on the mat, he has reported on Nordic fighters for MMA Viking. In his public account of his training, Bjørlo traces his start to Frontline Academy in Oslo. After moving outside the city, he joined a group that his friend Ronnie had started. It was a small group: two blue belts and several white belts. The group later trained under Bruno Carvalho, whose affiliation directory now names Bjørlo as Nesodden Grappling's coach. Nesodden Grappling belongs to Nesodden Judoklubb and identifies itself as Team Carvalho, training under Bruno. Its programme includes gi sessions, practised in the traditional training uniform, and no-gi sessions, without it, as well as an open mat. His writing has also documented other fighters' work. MMA Viking's contributor archive collects his reporting on Nordic athletes. On January 30, 2016, he interviewed Joseph Karim as Karim prepared for his professional MMA debut. The article covered Karim's training at Frontline Academy, the same Oslo academy where Bjørlo says he began his own jiu-jitsu. Bjørlo has competed for Nesodden Grappling Team Carvalho as well. At the ADCC Nordic Open Norway on February 8, 2020, he placed second in the men's professional Masters 35+ division under 91 kilograms. The official result records him representing Norway and the club. Writing about learning, Bjørlo names his friend Davis Asare as someone he can learn from despite his own higher belt and more than twenty years in BJJ. He links keeping his technical knowledge current to his responsibility as a head coach. In that account, understanding techniques and how they connect matters alongside physical ability and tactics. He draws a parallel with his work in construction: both require him to keep learning.
