Marcus Bello

Marcus Bello helped build GF Team through teaching and new branches, from Aracaju to a later academy of his own in Katy, Texas.

Biography

Marcus Bello is a teacher associated with GF Team and the founder and head coach of Division One in Katy, Texas. His academy identifies him as a sixth-degree jiu-jitsu black belt and a judo black belt. In his school autobiography, Bello traces his martial arts education to childhood in Rio de Janeiro. Born in 1975 and raised in Vila da Penha, he began judo at six and joined Douglas Motta's Espaço Livre academy at thirteen. His coach encouraged him to try jiu-jitsu to improve his ground fighting. At eighteen, he joined Gama Filho's university sports team under Alfredo Dornelles and earned an athletic scholarship. Teaching children encouraged him to study physical education, in which he graduated in 1998. Júlio César Pereira awarded him his jiu-jitsu black belt that December. GF Team's own history names Bello, Pereira and Alexandre Baraúna as the teachers who developed its Gama Filho university team with support from Pedro Gama Filho and Paulo Jardim. Scholarships and practical support from the university helped sustain the team. As it outgrew Taquara, it moved to Piedade and expanded into other neighbourhoods. The teachers trained black belts who went on to open further branches in Brazil and abroad. Bello took responsibility for expansion into Aracaju in 1999, spending two years building a Gama Filho jiu-jitsu branch there. He returned to Rio in 2001 to coach at Centro Esportivo Miécimo da Silva. His autobiography also records his joining the Brazilian Navy as an officer in 2009. His own competition record includes adult black-belt middleweight silver at the 2002 Brazilian Championship, representing UGF. Later titles came in the Master age-group divisions. He won Master 3 black-belt medium heavyweight at both the 2016 World Master Championship and the Pans, then retained the Pan title in 2017. In 2021, now competing in Master 4, he won medium heavyweight at both events and added open-class bronze at the World Masters. The open class brings different weight categories together. Bello's role in other teachers' development appears in their own accounts. In a 2021 BJJ Legends interview, Bruno Alves named him among his teachers and described carrying their teachings on to his own students. Division One says it began serving Katy in 2022. As a GF Team affiliate, the academy offers children's and adult jiu-jitsu, competition training, self-defence and judo. A student writing as NoGiMike gave a more personal account in November 2023. He recalled Bello teaching at Paradigm in Houston, coaching him through competitions and promoting him through the coloured belts to black belt that month. In the student's interpretation, Bello recognised development across no-gi grappling, practised without the traditional jacket, wrestling, mixed martial arts and helping teammates, rather than judging progress only against a fixed promotion checklist.
