José Olímpio da Rocha Neto, or Zé Radiola, is a Pernambuco-based fifth-degree jiu-jitsu black belt and founder of ZR Team.

Biography

José Olímpio da Rocha Neto, or Zé Radiola, is a Pernambuco-based fifth-degree jiu-jitsu black belt under Carlos Gracie Jr. and the founder of ZR Team. He worked as a professional surfer before turning to jiu-jitsu. In a 2010 interview, he recalled encountering the sport through a friend in São Paulo. He later met Carlos Gracie Jr. at a tournament. He made regular trips from Pernambuco to train at Gracie Barra in Rio de Janeiro; eventually, he went every two months. His Jaboatão dos Guararapes academy, near Recife, opened toward the end of 1996. He also competed for Gracie Barra. At the 1999 Brazilian Championship, he placed third at featherweight among Master 1 purple belts. The following year he won both the featherweight and open divisions for Master 2 purple belts at the Pan Championship, as well as featherweight gold at the Master International. He took the Master 2 featherweight Pan title again at brown belt in 2001 and at black belt in 2002, with open-class bronze medals in both years. ZR Team dates his black belt under Carlos Gracie Jr. to 2001. Bráulio Estima recalled that Fernando Cavalcante introduced him to Radiola at the Gracie Barra academy in Recife and that Radiola returned from Rio with new instruction for his students. Radiola later described seeking sponsorship for his athletes and connected those efforts with Estima's first Pan appearance. A 2008 Pernambuco legislative record named Radiola director of Academia Gracie Barra Pernambuco in a proposal to commend his athletes' performance at the June world championship in California. ZR Team gives June 2016 as its founding date and identifies Radiola as its founder. In 2019, the team took first place at the 13th Nordeste Open, with Radiola named as its leader. A 2023 report announced plans for seminars in eight countries. A Pernambuco federation register names him as the professor responsible for ZR Team Pernambuco.
