Jason Alexander Gagnon

Starting jiu-jitsu at 21, Jason Gagnon became a Cobrinha black belt and built Genesis Martial Arts with two partners in Abbotsford.

Biography

Jason Alexander Gagnon is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Rubens “Cobrinha” Charles and the owner and head instructor of Genesis Martial Arts in Abbotsford. His route into teaching grew alongside international competition and visits to the Los Angeles academy that became a model for his own school. Born in Vancouver in 1986, Gagnon grew up in Western Canada and eventually settled in Coquitlam. Baseball, football and rugby came before jiu-jitsu. According to BJJ Heroes, an interest in mixed martial arts and a friend's dare led him to begin training in 2007, aged twenty-one, with Don Whitefield and Shawn Albrecht at West Coast BJJ. He began visiting Cobrinha's academy in 2011. After Whitefield awarded him brown belt in 2012, he changed team allegiance in search of a more professional competition environment. His results at adult brown-belt featherweight included American National titles in 2013 and 2014 and the 2013 Asian title. At the 2014 European Championship, he took silver. The original results record him under Alliance or Alliance Los Angeles. A November 2014 Abbotsford News profile explained how the Genesis partnership developed. Gagnon and Lloyd Handy had trained together at Cobrinha's academy. Handy first sponsored his tournament travel, then proposed buying the Abbotsford gym. Rory Bjarnason joined as another investor, and the three bought the school that became Genesis Martial Arts. Cobrinha's influence extended into the details of the new academy. The profile described Genesis adopting its model's mat colours, pre-class greetings and approach to teaching. Gagnon's daily work included running and cleaning the gym, training and coaching classes. He described jiu-jitsu as an honest test of learning against resistance and through defeat: a practitioner could tap, signalling a submission, and begin again. Cobrinha awarded him black belt in November 2015. The following year, Gagnon combined a three-week European competition tour with seminars in Paris and Berlin. The Abbotsford News reported adult black-belt featherweight golds in Madrid and Berlin and silver in Paris, with qualification points for the 2017 Worlds as his goal. Competing in the Master 1 age group, he won black-belt featherweight bronze at the World Master Championships in both 2016 and 2017, representing Alliance.
