Lillian Marchand

Lillian Marchand left Vernon, British Columbia, for Atos at fifteen and at 19 won IBJJF world titles with and without the gi in her first black belt season.

Biography

Lillian Marchand received her Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt in May 2025, and within her first season at the rank she became a world champion of the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) both without the gi, the jacket-and-pants uniform of the sport, and in it: in Las Vegas in December 2025 and in Long Beach, California, in May 2026. She was 19 both times. She grew up in Vernon, British Columbia, and belongs to the Okanagan Indian Band. She started training at five at NOS BJJ in Vernon under Mario Deveault, who took her through the children's grades to blue belt. By her own account she did not take competition seriously until she was eleven or twelve. Her link to Atos Jiu-Jitsu in San Diego began early. André and Angelica Galvão, the co-founders of Atos, taught a seminar at her Canadian gym while she was still a yellow belt, and by about the age of nine she was traveling to San Diego for training camps at Atos ahead of the IBJJF Kids Pans, going back every year. At fifteen she left home and committed herself to Atos and to a professional career. At first she spent half of each year in San Diego, then moved there for good. She has said she disliked the city for about two years because she missed home, before she came to love it, and she has called the Galvãos and her Atos teammates her "chosen family". She has described the road as hard and credited a supportive family, and her advice to young athletes from small towns is that their hometown should not limit what they aim for. The training clicked, she told the IBJJF, in her juvenile years, when she was on the mat every day among world champions. She credits Angelica Galvão with telling the Atos students to carry themselves as black belts while they were still blue belts, and with the habits that followed in lifting, diet, drilling and mindset. In a 2025 team profile, Atos named Angelica as her biggest inspiration in the sport and listed De La Riva guard and a move called the Lilliplata as her favorite techniques. In 2023, as a juvenile blue belt, she won the four IBJJF championships that make up its Grand Slam, in divisions ranging from lightweight to heavyweight: the Europeans in Paris, the Pans in Florida, the Brasileiro (Brazil's national championship) in São Paulo and the Worlds in California. In 2024, her first season among adults, she won the purple belt medium-heavyweight division at the same four events and added the open-weight division, known as the open class, at the Brasileiro. Atos's video channel records that the Galvãos promoted her to brown belt on the podium. In November 2024, at 18, she won the brown and black belt 70 kg division at Abu Dhabi's World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship, competing four kilograms above her own weight. She took three matches by submission before beating Sabatha Santos in the final, a win Atos later listed as her favorite. At brown belt middleweight in 2025 she won the Europeans, the Pans and the Brasileiro, and finished second at the Worlds behind Helena Crevar. Her first IBJJF event at black belt was the European No-Gi Championship in Rome in early November 2025, where she won her opening match and went out in the second round. Back at the World Professional championship in Abu Dhabi in late 2025, she won again, now at black belt and at 62 kg, and said it felt good to face women her own size after the heavier opponents of 2024. Before the No-Gi Worlds she said no-gi was not her preferred format, but that it was where the attention and the professional money were. At the No-Gi World Championship in Las Vegas on December 13, 2025, she entered the black belt lightweight bracket as its lowest seed and won three of her four matches by submission. In the final she beat Amanda Bruse, her teammate at Atos. The IBJJF noted that she was the only Canadian to win a no-gi world title that year. Her IBJJF gi debut at black belt came at the European Championship in Lisbon, where the federation later judged her performance disappointing. At the Pans in Kissimmee, Florida, she was seeded 17th, the lowest seed in the middleweight division. Her first match, against the second seed, ended level and went her way on the referee's decision. She then won her quarterfinal with a rear-naked choke, used her passing pressure to set up a lapel choke against Aghata Rabelo in the semifinal, and in the final isolated Elisabeth Clay's arm for an armbar. It was her first Grand Slam title at black belt. In the open class she lost to Gabi Pessanha by six points. Days later, on March 31, 2026, she made her debut with the professional promotion Who's Number One at WNO 32 in Austin, Texas, winning a unanimous decision over Brazil's Jaine Fragoso in a nine-minute match where each of them went for submissions. A few weeks after that she met Clay again in the middleweight final of the Brasileiro. They exchanged attacks for nearly five minutes before Clay won by submission, which left each of them with one Grand Slam final win over the other that season. At the World Championship in Long Beach at the end of May, the middleweight division drew 21 competitors, and Marchand came in as the fourth seed and the reigning Pan champion. She opened by submitting Gabriele Schuck with a lapel choke applied from the back, won her quarterfinal by two points from a sweep and beat Emily Ferreira on an advantage in the semifinal. In the final she faced Clay once more. Neither could impose her game, and an early penalty against Clay for pulling guard decided the match in Marchand's favor. In the open class she lost to Pessanha in the quarterfinals by four points. The title did not fully satisfy her. In June she told the Vernon Morning Star that she was glad to have won but unhappy with how the final had been decided, that she "could have been more dominant", and that there was much more she could have done. After the Worlds she met members of the Okanagan Indian Band council, and Chief Dan Wilson congratulated her on the title. She also visited NOS in Vernon and showed her medals to the children there. She said that what Deveault had told her years earlier, about how well she could do in the sport, made sense to her 15 years later. On June 22, 2026, Mayor Victor Cumming and Vernon's city council formally recognized what she had achieved. In 2025 and 2026 she taught the children's classes at Atos, work the Vernon Morning Star described as her living outside competition. She has also studied early childhood education and has been learning the language of the Okanagan Indian Band. In September 2026 she was announced as a speaker at TEDx Kalamalka Lake, scheduled for November 3, 2026. At the 2026 Pan No-Gi Championship, she took bronze in the black belt lightweight division.
