Fabricio Andrey Batista Junior

Fabricio “Hokage” Andrey rose from a Manaus youth project to a black-belt world title, adapting his instinctive game across ONE and ADCC.

Biography

Fabricio Andrey’s path began with capoeira beside his father in Manaus, moved through a neighborhood jiu-jitsu project and a choice to train professionally in São Paulo, and reached the black-belt world title. Known as “Hokage,” the Brazilian competitor has carried an attacking style into both gi and submission-grappling events while learning to balance instinct with strategy. Fabricio Andrey Batista Junior was born in Manaus on March 5, 2000. He practiced capoeira during early childhood and started jiu-jitsu at thirteen. In late 2013, he joined Projeto Nandinho near his home and trained under Melqui Galvão. The project gave him his entry into the sport; by green belt, he was already training with professional competition in mind. As a blue belt, Andrey moved to São Paulo to improve his prospects of obtaining a visa for competition in the United States. Alliance Matriz and Dream Art supported him, and he stayed to train. Michael Langhi and Fábio Gurgel later awarded him his purple and brown belts. When it was time for black belt, Andrey returned to Manaus, where Galvão promoted him in August 2020. His results tracked that progression through the belts. Andrey won the blue-belt World Championship in 2018 and the purple-belt edition in 2019. He followed consecutive colored-belt world titles with victory at the 2020 brown-belt European Championship, but the pandemic cancellations ended that season’s chance to pursue a brown-belt World title. At black belt, he won the 2021 featherweight World Championship, submitting former champion Jamil Hill-Taylor in the final. His later major titles included the 2022 Brazilian Nationals and the 2023 European Championship. His nickname gives his competition presence a personal signature. “Hokage” and the stomping power-up he performs before matches refer to Naruto, an anime he follows. A 2025 ONE Championship feature described his attacks through flying armbars, high-amplitude takedowns, and triangle chokes. A flying armbar attacks the elbow while jumping into position; a triangle choke traps the neck and one arm between the legs. Those techniques fit the submission-seeking instinct Andrey later described in his own words. That instinct has also created a problem for him to solve. In a June 2026 interview, Andrey said he sometimes lost because he pursued submissions without enough strategy. He credited longtime friend Diogo Reis with teaching him more about rules and tactical decisions. The two grew up training together in Manaus, and Andrey recalled taking the younger Reis home after practice. Their friendship continued after they joined different teams; the same interview described Andrey as having joined Alliance while Reis formed Agora Jiu-Jitsu. Friendship did not remove competition between them. Andrey and Reis met in the quarterfinals of ADCC 2022, and Andrey said in 2026 that he would be willing to face him again in ONE. The visa question that shaped Andrey’s move to São Paulo also informed how he viewed the wider Brazilian scene. Before the 2022 Brazilian Nationals, he said competing at home felt special and argued that visa barriers kept some strong Brazilian athletes from entering events in the United States. It was his assessment of the field, grounded in a practical obstacle he had encountered early in his own career. ONE introduced another set of adjustments. Before his third appearance in February 2026, Andrey said his first trip to compete in Thailand had brought nerves and an unfamiliar experience. He learned to manage later trips through familiar food, hydration, weight management, and training. Across his first three ONE submission-grappling matches, he defeated Ashley Williams, Eduardo Granzotto, and João Mendes by unanimous decision. Owen Jones then beat him by split decision at ONE Fight Night 44 in June 2026, leaving Andrey with a 3–1 record in the promotion and no submission finishes in those four bouts. Andrey’s immediate plans remained centered on grappling. After helping Jean Silva prepare for UFC 324, he said in February 2026 that MMA interested him, but treated a move into the sport as a possibility several years away. His nearer ambitions were ADCC, ONE, and another gi World title. At ADCC 2026 in September, Andrey submitted David Santos in the under-66-kilogram round of sixteen. He then lost a referee decision in the quarterfinal to Kennedy Maciel, who went on to win the division.
