Erin K. Harpe

Erin Harpe took childhood jiu-jitsu into MMA, coloured-belt world titles and a Florida academy she opened with Luis Mata in 2018.

Biography

Erin K. Harpe is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Matt Arroyo and Rob Kahn, a mixed martial arts fighter and co-owner of Gracie Apollo Beach in Ruskin, Florida. She began learning from her father, James Harpe, as a child. Her career has since included world titles at blue and purple belt, professional grappling and teaching at her own academy. Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1994, Harpe says she began competing at nine. In 2013 she moved from Connecticut to Tampa to train in Kahn's Gracie Tampa network and pursue professional MMA. The following year she won adult blue-belt medium heavyweight at the IBJJF World Championship and took silver in the open class, where athletes of different weights compete together. After her first amateur MMA win in August 2014, she told Moai Martial Arts that preparation had helped her manage her nerves and feel comfortable striking. Her six-day training week under Arroyo combined Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling, jiu-jitsu, sparring and conditioning. She valued Kahn's ability to make techniques understandable and Arroyo's commitment to helping his fighters pursue their goals. At that point, she intended to put MMA first while entering major jiu-jitsu tournaments when the schedules allowed. Teaching was already part of her plans: in the same interview, she said she wanted to open an academy, but saw it as a longer-term ambition behind her fighting career. She won the adult purple-belt medium-heavyweight title at the 2015 IBJJF Worlds. A knee injury interrupted her competition career in 2016, before she returned in 2018. That year she took medium-heavyweight bronze at the Worlds at brown belt, then won her weight division and took open-class silver at the Pan No-Gi Championship, fought without the traditional gi jacket. Her earlier Worlds entries were under Gracie Humaitá; the 2018 Pan No-Gi results registered her with Gracie Humaitá South Bay. In February 2018, she and Luis Mata opened Gracie Apollo Beach. Harpe's current academy biography describes teaching as a passion that developed alongside competing. She places particular importance on sharing self-defence with women and children and helping people feel welcome when they first enter the school. She is now its co-owner and head instructor. According to BJJ Heroes, Arroyo awarded her black belt on December 14, 2019. Her school recognises both Arroyo and Kahn in her black-belt lineage. In MMA, she won her Invicta FC debut against Auttumn Norton by split decision at Invicta FC 36. Her professional grappling appearances included the 2021 WNO Championship. In the heavyweight repechage, the route back toward a placing after a loss, she defeated Amanda Loewen and Amanda Leve before losing the third-place match to Elisabeth Clay. FloGrappling records her finish against Loewen as a kimura, a shoulder lock, at 6:24. At the 2025 IBJJF Pan No-Gi Championship, competing under Gracie Humaitá South Bay, she took silver in adult black-belt heavyweight.
