Tamiris Fernanda da Silva

A nursing student who first tried jiu-jitsu at 18, Tamiris Silva went on to win IBJJF world titles at brown belt in 2022 and at black belt in 2024.

Biography

Tamiris Fernanda da Silva is a heavyweight black belt with the Dream Art team and the 2024 IBJJF world champion in the women's black-belt heavyweight division. She had won the brown-belt world title at the same weight two years earlier. According to BJJ Heroes, she did not take up jiu-jitsu until she was 18 and studying nursing. Her BJJ Heroes biography gives her birth as 19 July 1996 in Mogi das Cruzes, in São Paulo state, and says she grew up active in sports. She took up martial arts at 12, beginning with judo, which she soon left, and moving on shortly afterwards to karate and kickboxing. Jiu-jitsu reached her through the gym where she lifted weights, when the coach Saulo Barbosa started a class there. Grappling did not especially interest her, but she saw Barbosa every day, and his positive manner led her to try a class. She had not competed in her earlier martial arts, yet she began entering jiu-jitsu tournaments straight away, and BJJ Heroes says her results led her to give up a part-time job so that she could put her time into her studies and her competitive career. IBJJF's results show what followed. Silva won the adult heavyweight division (79.3 kg) at the Brazilian Nationals, the Campeonato Brasileiro, at white belt in 2017 and at blue belt in 2018 and 2019. In 2019 she also took bronze in the blue-belt open class, which was won by her teammate Larissa Martins dos Santos. The results for those years give her team as Alliance. BJJ Heroes says that in 2019, as her time at blue belt was coming to an end, Dream Art approached Silva and Martins, and that with their instructor's agreement both moved to a team that offered them better prospects in the sport. Introducing a 2021 interview with the team's coaches, BJJ Heroes describes the Dream Art Project as a professional team founded in São Paulo in October 2018 to support a selected group of gifted young athletes, giving them high-level coaching, strength and conditioning and nutrition advice. Her BJJ Heroes profile says she trained a great deal there with the coaches Isaque Bahiense and Gabriel Figueiró and represented the team from purple belt through black belt. The profile names her favorite position as the lasso guard, an open guard in which the bottom player wraps a leg around the opponent's arm. IBJJF still listed her under Alliance at the 2020 European Championship, where she took bronze in the purple-belt heavyweight division. Dream Art had been closely linked with Alliance from the beginning and represented it on the international circuit, BJJ Heroes reported, until Bahiense and Figueiró announced the end of the partnership on 7 September 2021. From the 2021 Brazilian Nationals onward, the results list her under Dream Art. Those 2021 Nationals, held at the Arena da Juventude, gave her double gold at purple belt. Graciemag reported that on 30 September she beat two opponents to reach the heavyweight final, then took the title against Maria Raniele Alencar of Carlson Gracie Team. In the open class she beat three more to set up a final with Larissa Martins, her teammate and the middleweight champion. The two closed out that final for Dream Art, which in jiu-jitsu means that teammates who meet in a final do not contest it; IBJJF lists Silva first and Martins second. At brown belt in 2022 she won the heavyweight division at the Pan Championship, the Brazilian Nationals and the World Championship, and added bronze in the open class at the Pan and the Brazilian Nationals. The runner-up in Brazil was Thaynara Aparecida da Silva Dias. At the World Championship, which Graciemag says began on 2 June 2022, she beat Paige Ivette Borras 3–0 in the final, and Dream Art ranked first among adult female teams at the same event, with 62 points. BJJ Heroes describes that brown-belt crown as her first IBJJF world title and says Barbosa promoted her to black belt that June. The site traces her lineage from Carlos Gracie through Reyson Gracie, Osvaldo Alves, Luis Dagmar, André Galvão, Everdan Olegário and Paulo Barauna to Barbosa. At black belt, the 2023 Pan Championship brought bronze in both the heavyweight division and the open class. Graciemag reported that the heavyweight title went to the reigning world champion, Larissa Dias, who had eliminated Silva in the semifinal. At the Brazilian Nationals in Barueri, where the black-belt finals were held on 7 May 2023, Silva won heavyweight gold. Her opponent in the final was Thaynara Dias, who had also finished second to her at brown belt the year before, and Silva submitted her with a clock choke in the last minute, a performance Graciemag called dominant. At that year's World Championship she took bronze in a division won by Melissa Stricker Cueto. IBJJF's recap called the 2024 World Championship the biggest Worlds on record, counting 352 black-belt matches. On the way to the heavyweight final Silva beat Melissa Cueto on advantages, 3–0, after their match ended 2–2 on points. Her opponent in the final was Amanda Magda of Fratres, and FloGrappling's Portuguese-language report describes a tight contest. Silva began by pulling with strong grips on the collar while Magda tried to free herself. When Magda got loose and dove for a foot attack, she left an opening for Silva to come up on top for two points. Magda kept going after the feet and earned two advantages, but Silva avoided being submitted and controlled from on top to win 2–0. Larissa Dias de Almeida and Melissa Stricker Cueto completed the podium in third. FloGrappling's English coverage credited the win to "strong top pressure and tactical brilliance", and another FloGrappling report noted that it was her first IBJJF world title at black belt, a year after her bronze at the same championship. Also in 2024, Silva took bronze at the Pan Championship, in the super-heavyweight division, and at the Brazilian Nationals. On 17 November she competed at The Crown, an IBJJF event at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, California, with four men's and two women's divisions, each carrying prize money. FloGrappling's list of competitors put her in the women's super-heavyweight (unlimited) division as "Tamiris Silva, IBJJF World Champion", and Graciemag's results placed her fourth in a division won by Gabi Pessanha. Before the 2025 Brazilian Nationals in São Paulo, FloGrappling's own world rankings placed her first among women's heavyweights. She finished second there behind Yara Soares do Nascimento, and the 2026 Brazilian Nationals ended the same way, with silver behind the same winner. In 2025 she also took silver in the super-heavyweight division at the South American Championship. At the World Championship she placed third in the heavyweight division in both 2025 and 2026, and both times the title went to Larissa Dias de Almeida.
