Ariel Tabak

South African-born Australian black belt Ariel Tabak moved from Melbourne's grappling scene to competition and coaching at Sydney's Kumite Jiu Jitsu.

Biography

Ariel Tabak is a South African-born Australian Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, competitor and coach. He is now based in Sydney and serves as head coach at Kumite Jiu Jitsu, a current role documented by both the academy and Tabak's own coaching page. BJJ Heroes carries most of the available record of Tabak's early life and development. It reports that he was born in South Africa in 1994, lived briefly in New Zealand and reached Melbourne at age six. Before grappling, he played competitive basketball and spent several years in taekwondo. He encountered grappling at a mixed martial arts gym in 2009, with Daniel Keane and Daniel Shaw guiding his early development. Repeated training trips later took him to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. On a 2018 trip to Brazil with Hope Douglass, Tabak visited Cicero Costha's academy in São Paulo. He subsequently joined and represented Costha's squad, and BJJ Heroes reports that Costha promoted him to black belt on June 4, 2019. The same source lists a 2019 Pan-Pacific title, the 2022 Pan-Pacific open-weight championship, a 2022 Houston Open title and bronze at the ADCC Oceania and Asia Trials among his notable results. Tabak's present work at Kumite is distinct from that historical Cicero Costha affiliation. Alongside coaching in Sydney, his own page describes online coaching, instructional material and sparring footage as parts of his teaching work.
