Anderson Munis dos Santos

Anderson Munis won the 2024 IBJJF world title at super-heavyweight by submitting his younger brother, Erich, in the final, 11 years after they began training.

Biography

Anderson Munis dos Santos won the black belt super-heavyweight division at the 2024 IBJJF World Championship by submitting his younger brother, Erich, in the final. That year he also won the same division at the IBJJF Pan Championship. The two had started training together in 2013, when jiu-jitsu arrived in their small hometown of Panorama, in the state of São Paulo. According to BJJ Heroes, Anderson's father was a major influence on him and his brothers Alex and Erich, encouraging a love of sport and martial arts in a town with little to offer in combat sports. Erich, interviewed by the site in 2020, described their father as a very sporty man who wanted his sons to become fighters, and said the brothers signed up as soon as an academy opened in Panorama. BJJ Heroes says jiu-jitsu came to the town through the Equipe Raça team. Anderson, then in his late teens, started there with Erich, while Alex, the eldest, trained at a Nova União and Clube Feijão affiliate in nearby Três Lagoas, where he was working with their father. At blue belt the brothers decided to pursue jiu-jitsu as a career, BJJ Heroes writes. Alex's connection to Clube Feijão led to a scholarship and an invitation to train full time at Rodrigo Feijão's headquarters in Maringá. Alex and Anderson moved there first, and Erich joined them a year later. Under Feijão, BJJ Heroes says, the small-town brothers came to be seen as top prospects, a standing they earned at purple belt. The IBJJF's official results give the outline. Registered with Nova União, Anderson won the blue belt heavyweight division at the 2017 Brazilian National Championship and finished second to Erich in the open-weight class. At the 2018 Nationals the brothers took the top two places in both the purple belt heavyweight division, which FloGrappling said had 28 entrants, and the open class, with Anderson listed first each time. Still under the Nova União name, he then won the purple belt super-heavyweight division at the 2019 European Championship. The brothers were winning but struggling for money, according to BJJ Heroes. After they asked on social media for help to compete at an international tournament, a representative of Dream Art got in touch; Dream Art was then a new center set up to support professional athletes. In Erich's account to the site, he had advertised a raffle on social media to raise travel money for competitions, and the person who contacted him was Israel Bahiense, brother of the project's leader, Isaque Bahiense. Times were hard and they had been skipping important tournaments they could not afford, Erich said; Dream Art's offer let them concentrate on competing. BJJ Heroes names both Dream Art and Alliance among the teams Anderson once represented, and his IBJJF registration changed from Nova União to Alliance during 2019. Registered with Alliance, he won the purple belt super-heavyweight division at the 2019 Brazilian Nationals, where he was also third in the open class, and at the 2019 World Championship. Graciemag reported that at the Worlds he and Erich each needed five matches to win their weight divisions and won three open-class matches apiece before meeting each other in the final and closing out the division. The official results list Erich as the open-class champion and Anderson second. In March 2019 he also entered a Spyder Jiu-Jitsu Invitational grand prix in Seoul whose field mixed black, brown and purple belts. In the under-100 kg division he lost a semifinal to Cláudio Calasans on a decision and then beat Matheus Diniz on an advantage in the third-place match. BJJ Heroes says Isaque Bahiense and Gabriel Figueiró, the leaders of Dream Art, promoted him to black belt at a ceremony on September 28, 2020. JitsMagazine reported that Alex and Erich received their black belts on the same day, and that Dream Art announced the promotions on its official Instagram account. Still representing Dream Art, he won the eight-man grand prix at Big Deal Pro 3 in Florianópolis on July 10, 2021, beating Harryson Pereira, Gabriel "Blade" Oliveira and, in the final, Erberth Santos. Graciemag called the final one of the most even contests of the night; Anderson went ahead on the scoreboard with 14 seconds left. The same year, BJJ Heroes' fight record shows, he reached the 120 kg final at the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam stop in Abu Dhabi and lost it to Roosevelt Sousa by a foot lock. At the World Championship, BJJ Heroes lists losses before the semifinals to Fellipe Trovo in 2021, Fellipe Andrew in 2022 and Eric Bergmann in 2023. Andrew also beat him in 2022 at the Pan Championship, in both the 100 kg division and the open class, and at the Brazilian Nationals. In April 2023 FloGrappling reported that eight athletes were leaving Dream Art for Fratres Jiu-Jitsu, which Flo called São Paulo's newest professional team; Anderson and his brothers were among them. According to Flo, each of the eight signed a two-year contract with a team founded a year earlier, whose competition program was nine months old. Co-founder Daniel Affini told Flo that the program allows athletes to concentrate on competing instead of teaching many classes a day. Competing for Fratres, Anderson finished third in both the black belt super-heavyweight division and the open class at that year's IBJJF South American Championship. At the 2024 Pan Championship, BJJ Heroes lists his wins over Renan Cruz, Anderson Kauan and, in the semifinal, Harryson Pereira by armbar; Erich, also of Fratres, took second place in the division. The World Championship that year was, by the IBJJF's account, its biggest on record, with 352 black belt matches. Anderson beat Fellipe Trovo, who had eliminated him in 2021, then Vinicius Trator 2-0 on points and, again in the semifinal, Harryson Pereira, on two advantages. FloGrappling wrote before the final that, given new rules on closing out, it was not certain the brothers would actually fight each other. They did, and Anderson won with a kneebar, a type of leg lock. Flo noted that it was only the second time Erich had been submitted at black belt. Graciemag put Anderson on its list of 25 black belts to watch at the 2025 World Championship. There, according to BJJ Heroes, he beat Guilherme Cypriano with a toe hold in the open class before losing to Gutemberg Pereira, and, in the over-100 kg division, lost a bout that was level at 2-2 on points and decided by advantages.
