Aarae Alexander

Aarae Alexander reached black belt and world-level podiums while fitting jiu-jitsu around civil engineering and a two-day training week.

Biography

Aarae Alexander built a championship record while studying—and later working—in civil engineering, despite a training schedule limited to two days a week. Born in Silver Spring, Maryland, in 1994 and raised in Fort Washington, she began training at Team Lloyd Irvin's headquarters in the summer of 2004 and entered her first competition in 2005. Youth-program coach Donnie Achnick guided her from that first event through the belt ranks. By May 2013, the University of Maryland described Alexander as an 18-year-old civil-engineering freshman who trained on Fridays and Saturdays. The university reported that she won lightweight gold at the 2013 Pan-American championship and had earned five IBJJF world titles by then. In June 2014, Team Lloyd Irvin announced her promotion to brown belt after she won the women's purple-belt lightweight division at the World Championship. Lloyd Irvin promoted Alexander to black belt on June 13, 2016, and she represented Team Lloyd Irvin during her competitive career. Her listed black-belt results include the 2016 New York BJJ Pro title, bronze at the 2017 World Championship, and silver at the 2018 Pan No-Gi Championship. Most of the available career timeline comes from BJJ Heroes; the university profile and the contemporary 2014 promotion announcement provide independent snapshots of her progress.
