Thiago Aguiar Abud

Thiago Abud returned from a career in law to full-time competition and teaches a structured approach to keeping guard.

Biography

Thiago Aguiar Abud is a Murilo Santana black belt who returned to competitive jiu-jitsu after building a career in law. Born in São Paulo in 1984, he had tried swimming, tennis, football as a goalkeeper and speed skating before specialising in grappling, according to BJJ Heroes. He also practised judo while seeking his parents’ permission to begin jiu-jitsu. Fernando Yamasaki became his first instructor, guiding him through the juvenile belts and blue belt. Unity’s biography dates his start in jiu-jitsu to thirteen and describes him as a four-time state champion in his early competitive years. An arm injury requiring surgery interrupted that progress. When he returned, he struggled to picture a future in competition. He stopped training to attend university, completed a law degree and worked in the legal profession. At twenty-two, Abud resumed jiu-jitsu recreationally with Murilo Santana. Unity credits Santana with encouraging him over several years to take competition seriously again. Around thirty, Abud committed to a full-time competitive career. In the academy’s account, he described finally beginning to believe in himself. In 2018, he won the World Master Championship’s Master 1 brown-belt featherweight division. Santana awarded him his black belt on 23 February 2019. Unity’s record lists black-belt wins that year at the Rome, Munich and Poznan gi Opens and the London Fall No-Gi Open. He also competed in the adult division, taking black-belt featherweight bronze at the 2021 No-Gi Pans. In 2025, he won Master 3 black-belt lightweight gold at the European Championship and bronze in the same age, belt and weight category at the European No-Gi Championship. His current IBJJF registration is with Unity Jiu-Jitsu Brasil. Dave Leon, writing in his instructor biography at 410 Academy, credits Abud with awarding his purple belt in 2016. A 2019 account by BJJ Globetrotters visitor J. W. Seo names Abud among the guest instructors who taught at Uplay Martial Arts in Luxembourg. Abud’s instructional, 360 Degrees Guard Retention, addresses how to keep an opponent from getting past the legs while playing guard. Its public curriculum begins with concepts labelled compass, centreline, heavy hip and crossing line, followed by mobility work. The second section puts side-switching and centreline exercises before seated guard and guard pulls using a collar grip.
