Thalison Vitorino Soares

Brazilian roosterweight with an IBJJF world title at every coloured rank, the 2022 Worlds, and a gym of his own in Australia.

Biography

Thalison Vitorino Soares was born in May 1999. FloGrappling gives the day as the 21st; a TATAME piece from January 2021, noting that he would turn 22 that May, lands independently on the same month and year. Where he was born is less settled. ONE Championship and the Amazonas paper Vanguarda do Norte both say Manacapuru. In a 2021 interview with GracieMag he says instead that he had been living in Caviana, in the interior of Amazonas, and went to Manaus at eleven to live with his mother, after his father died. No source read for this profile carries both versions. He has described what the Manaus years looked like from inside. The house had a single room; his mother and his two sisters lived in it with him, and an igarapé ran alongside. When it rained, he says, the water rose until it reached the underside of the house and going out was impossible. His life today, he added, is a much better one. Jiu-jitsu did not arrive in a straight line. He was nine the first time, he says, and it was friends who got him through the door. Six months later he was gone: he had to go and live in a different city with his father, and three years passed before he trained again. Back in Manaus there were friends near his house who by then trained at a social project. An old training partner told him the gym they had both known had closed, and that something new had opened in his own backyard. He kept his distance. It took running into more of the same old partners at that project before he went. Once he had, the day ran twice. He trained in the morning, went to school, and came back for the evening session. His mother worked, and coming back at night she would look in at the gym for the last of the session and take him home with her — every day, he says. At fourteen he asked whether he could make a living from the sport, and his mother said no. What changed that was Melqui Galvão. In the GracieMag version, Galvão was someone he already trained alongside in Manaus, who was affiliated to Cícero Costha and had the contact; that introduction is what took him to São Paulo. In a 2018 interview he gave the same friend more credit still: Galvão spoke to Cícero Costha about him, talked his mother round until she agreed, and paid the fare. January 2015 was when it happened — he went to São Paulo, to live there and to train. Vanguarda do Norte puts it as a fifteen-year-old travelling alone to Cícero Costha's Fighters House, which fits the date he gives himself. He was the only one living there who was still a minor, and nothing was coming in. Cícero Costha, he says, rounded up people who would help, and there was rice and beans to eat. Entry into tournaments he paid for in labour: he worked the events themselves, building the mats in exchange for a place in the bracket. His first journey out of Brazil nearly did not happen. The flight was routed through the United States, and the visa he needed for it was turned down. Someone stepped in at the last minute, and he went. A week after he won a second CBJJ Brazilian title the visa was granted, and California in 2016 gave him his first World Championship. FloGrappling had already made him its 2016 Prospect of the Year. Until the European Championships he had competed as a teenager: at the 2016 Worlds he took the juvenile 2 title as a blue belt, in the light featherweight division. The Euros were his first outing among adults. By March 2017 he was about to wear a purple belt in competition for the first time. Cícero Costha had entered him in the purple roosterweight division at the Pans at short notice; the call reached him in New York, and the belt itself, he said, would be handed over once he was back in Brazil. New York became his base for preparation, and Unity the gym he camped at — the run-up there covered the 2017 Worlds, the Brazilian, the World Pro in Abu Dhabi and the Pan. Late in 2018 he said he did not actually know where he lived. Doors had opened after the Grand Slam at purple, and he was travelling almost without pause, competing and giving seminars. Asked who he liked to watch, he named Paulo and João Miyao. FloGrappling had already run the nickname 'Little Miyao' in a 2017 headline about him; none of the sources read here explains where it came from. A Grand Slam, in the IBJJF's sense, means taking the European, the Pan-American, the Brasileiro and the Worlds inside the same year; that is TATAME's definition of the term he used. Without the gi his record runs as a ladder of its own — gold at the No-Gi Worlds four years running, from 2016 through 2019, each one at a higher rank than the last, ending on black. The promotion itself came in June 2019, shortly after he won the Worlds in the gi; FloGrappling and TATAME date it the same way, and ONE Championship, which calls him Brazilian, credits Cícero Costha with awarding it. His first major title at the new rank arrived at the 2019 No-Gi Worlds, decided on points against Rodnei Barbosa after he had taken the back and finished with a rear naked choke in both of his earlier bouts. FloGrappling had been filming him through that year's gi season for a five-part series. Australia had come into it earlier, as an invitation to train. He had just won the Worlds at purple, on a damaged knee, and he remembers fighting almost unable to walk. GracieMag places the move itself immediately after his black belt campaign at the 2020 Europeans, and describes the point of it as building a career as a gym owner and not only as a competitor. English he only learned to speak, he says, once he had moved for good, in 2020. There was a business partner in place already — a purple belt, training as a hobby, not a competitor — and the two of them had been planning a gym. By January 2021 TATAME had him more than a year in the country with that gym open and jointly run; its headline puts the opening at twenty-one, which with a May 1999 birth falls somewhere between May 2020 and May 2021, and the piece reports the place only a few months old and already running under pandemic restrictions. Vanguarda do Norte, writing in November 2024, dates the opening to 2019 instead. The readings above were recorded at the time; that one was not. GracieMag, in mid-2021, put him on Braus Fight's roster as a competitor and had him teaching at a Byron Bay gym. The gym, he points out, is unaffiliated in a way he himself is not as an athlete, which leaves how well it does resting on how much he puts in. The head for business he traces back further: his parents split up when he was small and he went to Amazonas to live with his father, who ran a fruit stall; he worked there throughout, and picked up the rudiments of handling money early. Writing in mid-2021 he attached a concrete result to having gone about things differently — the year before, he had been able to buy a new house for his mother. Fifteen tournaments a year was his rate before the pandemic, which he worked out as better than one a month. Once the calendar emptied he stopped rehearsing what he was already good at and went at the gaps instead; that, he says, is where his game filled out. In January 2021 TATAME listed what he had taken as a black belt so far: the No-Gi Worlds and the Grand Slam in Moscow. Ahead of his second Worlds as a black belt he packed his bags for California and the Mendes brothers' own gym, Art of Jiu-Jitsu, to study with Guilherme and Rafael. He called it an exchange, and expected his own gym to gain from it as well. The trip also brought him the IBJJF San Diego Open, the final tournament on his card ahead of the 2022 Worlds. He won those Worlds. Defending the title in 2023 he lost the final to Lucas Pinheiro, in the same 127-pound roosterweight class, and that July ONE Championship announced that both men had signed to its submission grappling roster. In that announcement Manacapuru is his birthplace, the team beside his name is Art of Jiu-Jitsu, the Mendes brothers' squad, and it credits him with a World title from the IBJJF at each of the coloured ranks. Vanguarda do Norte likewise places him training under the two brothers at AOJ. In October 2023 the IBJJF billed him as its reigning World Champion from 2022 and pointed out that he had not appeared at one of its events since the Asian Open in July; he needed two matches in the light featherweight division to win the Pan Pacific, with the Melbourne Sports and Aquatics Centre as the venue. Australia was where he had chosen to live and where he had been made welcome, he told the federation, and competing there meant something to him. On Saturday 16 November 2024, after three days of competition, he won the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championship. In the final he met Zayed Alkatheeri, from the Abu Dhabi Police Academy, who had won the title in 2023. The score stayed tight; Soares moved first and swept with roughly fifteen seconds left. He had turned up for it with a shaved head, backing a hair-donation drive that the Amazonas paper credits to a team-mate of his at AOJ, Ricardo Yoshito Amaral.
