Tomoyuki “Passport” Hashimoto is a Japanese black belt who saw his 2015 brown-belt Worlds submission run as a world-class turning point.

Biography

Tomoyuki “Passport” Hashimoto is a Japanese black belt whose nickname began with a missing travel document. He told BJJASIA that, before his first competition abroad, he lost his passport and Yuki Ishikawa gave him the name that followed him onto the mat. Hashimoto traces his start in jiu-jitsu to his first year of high school. His mother showed him an advertisement in a local magazine, while watching Bibiano Fernandes compete in MMA added to his interest. Takahito Yoshioka then coached him through blue, purple and brown belt. Yuki Nakai, rather than Yoshioka, awarded Hashimoto his black belt on September 19, 2015. That same year supplied the competition he later described as his most important. At the 2015 brown-belt World Championship, Hashimoto said he submitted every opponent. More than another result for the record, the run gave him hope that he might reach world-class level. His major achievements include Pan and European titles and a World Championship bronze medal, according to the IBJJF. Teaching also shaped his path. Hashimoto said that he approached Carpe Diem head Yuki Ishikawa because he wanted to teach jiu-jitsu as his full-time work, beginning his association with the academy. That account describes his Carpe Diem connection in 2020. The IBJJF’s current athlete page lists Arta as his competition affiliation in the Master 1 light-feather ranking; it does not establish a broader present-day academy role. In its history of jiu-jitsu in Asia, the IBJJF places Hashimoto among the Japanese competitors who helped open a path for the region’s next generation.
