Sebastian Augusto Lalli

Naturalized Brazilian fifth-degree black belt Sebastian Lalli helped build Checkmat and develop successive generations of competitors in Curitiba.

Biography

Sebastian Augusto Lalli, known as Seba, is a fifth-degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt whose work in Curitiba connects Checkmat's founding, its Brazilian operation, and several generations of black belts. A Revista Budô profile published on December 19, 2025, describes him as a naturalized Brazilian who was born in Buenos Aires on June 12, 1976, and has lived in Curitiba since he was three. Checkmat Brasil lists him as the professor at Equipe 1 in the city. BJJ Heroes reports that Lalli began training in early 1995, and that Carlos Lima took over his instruction some months later and awarded his black belt in 2002. The same profile says Lalli founded Equipe 1 in 2003 and began working with Leonardo Vieira as a coach and mentor in 2006. Those dates and the black-belt award come from that single profile. Checkmat Brasil's own history separately names Lalli among the people who formed Checkmat in 2008. Revista Budô reports that he took charge of the team's Brazilian operation around 2013; in the 2025 profile, Lalli said he remained responsible for that operation while sharing decisions with Leonardo and Ricardo Vieira. The two official IBJJF result pages reviewed for this profile provide representative results, not a complete career record. In 2010, Lalli won the Master 1 black-belt featherweight division at the World No-Gi Championship; the official table spells his surname “Lali.” The following year, he placed second in the same age, belt, and weight division at the Brazilian Championship. His influence as an instructor is visible in the black belts associated with him. BJJ Heroes identifies Andressa Mezari Cintra as a black belt under Lalli and reports that she earned her brown and black belts under his guidance, with the black belt attained in December 2017. The same source reports that Lalli awarded Mayara Monteiro Custódio her black belt in August 2020. A 2019 Globo Esporte report independently identifies Lalli as Mayara's professor, while Mayara named Sebastian and Letícia Lalli as the teachers who inspired her in a first-person interview. MMA Fighting reported in 2013 that Bruno Pucci became a black belt under Lalli at Checkmat. An official IBJJF preview published in February 2026 says Lalli awarded Aghata Rabelo her black belt on the podium after her 2025 brown-belt world title. Lalli's work also extends beyond his academy. Globo Esporte identified him in 2019 as president of the Paraná Jiu-Jitsu Federation and reported his account of how he and the academy helped athletes cover registration, travel, and other competition expenses. Revista Budô again identified him as the federation's president in 2022 and described Checkmat as operating under his leadership in that competition setting. Together, the records show a career shaped not only by two documented competition placements, but by the academy, team, federation, and students he helped move forward.
