Roberto Lage

A judo and jiu-jitsu instructor, Roberto Lage built Equipe Lage after training with Octávio de Almeida and promoted students including Patricia Lage.

Biography

Roberto Lage was a judo and jiu-jitsu instructor whose path through the martial arts began early. He started judo at eight, added karate ten years later, and began training jiu-jitsu at 25. Lage trained extensively with Octávio de Almeida before becoming an instructor himself. He formed Equipe Lage and promoted black belts including Fernando Yamasaki and his daughter, Patricia Lage. A 2024 CNN Brasil feature on Patricia identified her father as a master of judo and jiu-jitsu, preserving the family connection within that teaching lineage. Terra reported that Lage had held a coral belt in jiu-jitsu since 2012. Its account of his career also listed six São Paulo championship titles and a silver medal at the 1996 Pan-American Championship. Lage died in São Paulo on August 20, 2021, aged 71.
