Roberto Correa de Lima

Roberto “Gordo” Correa de Lima is a seventh-degree coral belt who developed offensive half guard and coached in Brazil, the UAE and Florida.

Biography

Roberto “Gordo” Correa de Lima is a seventh-degree coral belt and teacher whose offensive half-guard work spread from Rio de Janeiro. Gordo began training among Ralph, Renzo and Ryan Gracie in Barra da Tijuca in the mid-1980s; his recollection and his academy differ on the year. Carlos Machado first taught him, followed by Jean Jacques Machado after Gordo reached blue belt. He credits sustained daily practice for his progress. Carlos Gracie Jr. promoted him to black belt in 1993. After a knee injury in his teens, Gordo used half guard to defend, then worked with Jean Jacques Machado on sweeps and submissions. Renzo Gracie's academy credits Gordo with popularizing half guard in the 1990s, when many competitors treated it as a position to escape. The public outline of Gordo's later curriculum teaches ways to hold half guard, sweep, submit and take the back in response to an opponent's reactions. It also covers passing from top half guard. His contribution was to make an existing position useful for offense and to teach that approach as a system. Competition gave that work a stage. Gordo took middleweight silver at the 1994 Brazilian black-belt championship, then won the middleweight division at the inaugural IBJJF Worlds in 1996. The official 1997 Worlds result lists him second at medium-heavyweight behind Roberto Magalhães; it does not support a second world gold that year. He won the 2003 Pan heavyweight division. In Graciemag's account of that Pan campaign, he spent much of a semifinal defending Rener Gracie's triangle, passed guard late and went on to win the division. The federation's result confirms the title; the match sequence comes from the retrospective account. Gordo's teaching reached competitors with different careers. Antônio Braga Neto named both Gordo and Fábio Aníbal as teachers; Braga Neto won a 2008 black-belt World title representing Gordo JJ. Rafael dos Anjos received his jiu-jitsu black belt under Gordo and later named him among the coaches who helped him, alongside Rafael Cordeiro and others. Kyra Gracie described training with Gordo and Rommel at Gordo Jiu-Jitsu during her 2011 ADCC preparation. Dennis Asche credited Gordo with awarding his brown and black belts, while Amal Easton traced parts of his school's fundamentals to lessons from Gordo and Hélio Soneca. These are distinct teacher and training relationships, not a single line of pupils Gordo alone developed. In 2009 Gordo led the Gracie Fusion team in professional MMA. He later spent two years as head coach of the UAE national jiu-jitsu squad; his contract ended in 2017. During that period, athlete Faisal Al Ketbi won a no-gi black-belt title at the 2016 Rio Grand Slam and credited Gordo with suggesting a change of weight class. After the UAE post, Gordo joined his brother Rafael “Gordinho” Corrêa at a Florida academy. His current academy is in Weston, where Renzo Gracie awarded him a seventh-degree coral belt in 2024.
