Ricardo Marques

Ricardo Marques is a Brazilian black belt who leads Brazilian Top Team Juiz de Fora, where he taught Bernardo Faria and Leonardo Saggioro.

Biography

Ricardo Marques leads Brazilian Top Team Juiz de Fora, in Minas Gerais, where he teaches jiu-jitsu. Bernardo Faria trained under him there from 2001 to 2009 and credited him by name in Graciemag: Faria said those eight years taught him the greatest lesson in jiu-jitsu, that results and achievements come only through consistency and discipline, and that Marques never once arrived late for a training session at the academy or missed one; the magazine adds that the only days he did not teach were those of Brazilian or World Championship competitions. The rest of what is documented about him comes from a single undated article on the BJJ Fanatics Brazil blog, written about a civic honor he received. It gives his full name as Ricardo Camargo Marques, says he was born in 1971 in Juiz de Fora, in the interior of Minas Gerais, and that his students call him Ricardão. The same page says he received his black belt from Sérgio "Bolão" Souza on 7 December 2001, that he is a fourth-degree black belt certified by the IBJJF, and that he holds a bachelor's degree in Physical Education with a postgraduate qualification in sports training and exercise physiology. It has him beginning as an instructor at Academia Olympia in 1998 and working as a professor since 2001. The same paragraph turns to his record as a competitor: two International Masters titles with the IBJJF, in 2001 as a brown belt and again in 2008 as a black belt; a CBJJ Brazilian championship in 2012 at black belt; and the IBJJF Rio Open in 2008. For the last two that page gives neither a division nor a weight class; BJJ Heroes gives them as Senior 2 and Master. On his role at the Juiz de Fora branch that page says two things: that he founded it, and that he became responsible for it from 2006. BJJ Heroes supplies the sequence that joins them. Marques moved in 1997 to the camp of Roberto Atalla, who was then working with Rio Jiu-Jitsu Club; he was assisting in the gym when Atalla returned to Rio de Janeiro in December 1999, and the room and its students passed to him. In 2006 he merged that team with Murilo Bustamante’s Brazilian Top Team; Bustamante had co-founded Rio Jiu-Jitsu Club, the affiliation Marques came from. It also reports that he was made a Cidadão Benemérito of Juiz de Fora, his home city, by the city's Câmara de Vereadores, at a solemn session held on 7 November. The article is undated and gives no year for the honor.
