Murilo Rupp

Murilo Rupp co-founded Ataque Duplo in 1996 and handed his own black belt to Douglas Santos, who returned to New Zealand and built a school.

Biography

Murilo Rupp and Sergio Sa founded Ataque Duplo in Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, in 1996. EsporteSC's account presents their instructor, Antonio Claudio Collares Moreira, known as Tonicao, as the regional pioneer who had established jiu-jitsu teaching in Florianopolis before the pair founded the academy. Rupp's competition record spans both brown- and black-belt divisions. Official 1998 results list him first in the adult male brown-belt open class at the World Championship, representing Bolao. A separate official result from the Brazilian Championship that year lists him second in the adult male black-belt medium-heavy division, representing Carlson Gracie. The record continued at black belt at the Master International. In 2000, Rupp represented Brazilian Top Team and placed first in the Master 1 open class and third at heavyweight. In 2001, again representing Brazilian Top Team, he won the Master 1 heavyweight division and finished second in the open class. Rupp's teaching comes into view in Douglas Santos's account of moving to New Zealand. Santos said that after teaching there for a year as a brown belt, he returned to Florianopolis to train with Rupp. Immediately after a training session, Rupp handed his own black belt to Santos without a ceremony. Santos then returned to New Zealand and built a school.
