Renato Tavares de Moraes

A black belt from Rio de Janeiro who won IBJJF gold in Rome for Frontline Academy Oslo, coached in Jeddah and now teaches at KDT Jiu-Jitsu in Sandvika.

Biography

Renato Tavares de Moraes is a black belt from Rio de Janeiro who teaches Brazilian jiu-jitsu at KDT Jiu-Jitsu in Sandvika. Between 2010 and 2017 he won medals for Frontline Academy Oslo at Swedish and Nordic opens, at IBJJF tournaments in London and Rome, and at the federation's European championships, competing in the upper weight classes and the open class. KDT, which lists him as a fourth-degree black belt, says he started jiu-jitsu at six, trained under Eduardo "Teta" Rios and Ricardo Libório, and received his black belt in 2006. Rios and Libório are linked: when Frontline Academy Oslo's instructor page was archived in January 2016, it described Rios as a third-degree black belt under Libório who taught Brazilian jiu-jitsu, submission wrestling and MMA. The same club's invitation to an open summer mat on 8 to 10 July 2010 listed him, spelled "Renato Tavarres", among the instructors, together with Rios. Frontline's results list begins his record with a silver in the black-belt open class at the Swedish Open in November 2010. At the same tournament it gives him silver again in 2011 and 2012, gold at -94.3 kg in 2013 and bronze in the open class in 2016. It also has him taking silver in a black-belt class above 100 kg and in the open class at the 2011 Scandinavian Open, and at the Nordic Open in Stockholm in March 2013 he won silver at +100.5 kg and bronze in the open class. For June 2015 the list shows gold in a black-belt weight class and bronze in the open class at both the British National Jiu-Jitsu Championship and its no-gi version, fought without the traditional jacket. In IBJJF's official results he is listed under Frontline Academy. As an adult black belt he was second in the heavy division at both the London International Open and the European No-Gi Championship in 2012, and third in the No-Gi open class. In 2013 he won the heavy division at the Rome International Open and took second place in the same division at the European No-Gi Championship. Frontline's submission-wrestling report for that year mentioned his No-Gi silver and reported his gold in the advanced master class at Grapplers Quest's first European championship that summer. At the London International Open in 2014 he was third at heavy, and at its no-gi edition he was second in the open class. In 2015 he was third at heavy in Rome and third both at heavy and in the open class at the European No-Gi Championship. In 2016 and 2017 he also competed in IBJJF's master 1 age division, finishing third at ultra-heavy at the 2016 European Championship, second at super-heavy at the 2017 Rome International Open, and third both at ultra-heavy and in the open class at the 2017 European No-Gi Championship. At the 2016 London Fall International Open No-Gi, in the adult division, he was second at ultra-heavy and in the open class. KDT credits him with nearly 30 years of experience and says he has taught at private academies and at police stations in Oslo. The same page says he was head coach at Arena Gym in Jeddah, leading its jiu-jitsu program in 2016 and 2017. KDT Jiu-Jitsu, also known as Kadettangen Jiu-Jitsu, says it opened in January 2024 and that its students range from four-year-olds in the kids program to adults approaching 70. It describes his teaching as welcoming, humorous and professional, and says he shows that jiu-jitsu is open to anyone, whatever their age, build or background. Teaching alongside him there is Fabio Martins, who joined his team after moving to Norway in 2012 and received his black belt under him in 2023.
