Niko Han is one of the seminal figures of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Indonesia. He moved to the United States from Indonesia in 1996 and started training at Rickson Gracie's academy in Los Angeles on 28 October 1996, receiving his blue belt from Rickson on 15 November 1997. He earned his purple belt from Marcus Vinicius Di Lucia in 2000 and, after moving to train under BJJ/ADCC standout Jean Jacques Machado and coach Marc Laimon, received his brown belt (2003) and black belt (14 February 2008) from Laimon; Rickson Gracie separately issued him a black belt recognition certificate dated 8 October 2014. He established Synergy Jiu-Jitsu Academy on 28 July 2003 in Indonesia, founded the Indonesian Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation and the Indonesian Grappling Federation, and grew Synergy into a network of roughly 35 affiliated academies. He is now a 4th-degree black belt based in Bali, where he continues to teach.
